"Some time ago, perhaps before you were even born, a young girl was walking in her garden. She may have been called Mary - that's what most of the stories say. Mary was a little bit taller than the other girls her age and had brownish crinkly hair. She was quite thin, because she didn't always have exactly enough to eat. She liked honey and whistling and the colour blue and finding out." This is the story of Mary, a young girl born in a beautiful city full of rose gardens and fluttering kites. When she is still very small, Mary meets Lanmo, a shining golden snake, who becomes her very best friend. The snake visits Mary many times, he sees her city change, become sadder as bombs drop and war creeps in. He sees Mary and her family leave their home, he sees her grow up and he sees her fall in love. But Lanmo knows that the day will come when he can no longer visit Mary, when his destiny will break them apart, and he wonders whether having a friend can possibly be worth the pain of knowing you will lose them.

This charming little book is a modern fairytale. One day Mary meets a small golden snake called Lanmo, and they become friends. As the years pass, life becomes hard for Mary. The city grows colder and darker. Wars start, bombs fall and eventually Mary and her parents are forced to flee their home. Lanmo tries to keep them safe.

Thanks again for this lovely gift Helen, I read it with a cup of your Morrocan tea 🤍

Librarybelle Glad you liked this one! It wasn‘t for me, but I‘ve heard so many others who liked it! 2y
BarbaraBB @Librarybelle I really did. I read that it is being compared to The Little Ofoncd and that is a book I didn‘t like at all 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y

This was a delightful surprise - mainly because it is just the sort of thing I usually dislike. A small but perfectly formed story about friendship & love. Simple yet exquisitely crafted, to cram so much emotion & meaning into such a short work is no small talent. And the ending was just perfection. Don't know if it's due to the weird time we're living through but the whole thing just hit hard - in the best possible way.

This bittersweet little book was part of my #reposed book subscription package this month.

It‘s a short fable about a beautiful golden snake who befriends a little girl. Beautifully written, it made me happy and sad.

It‘s supposedly reminiscent of The Little Prince and, indeed, Kennedy thanks Saint-Exupéry in her acknowledgments.

This little book has a lot of heart! Beautiful tale of friendship, love, mortality and morality. It really reminded me of The Book Thief in a lot of ways. Highly recommend for a quick, thought provoking read.

@Elma @TheLibrarian @MirrorMask

Some books I‘m sorely tempted by! Have you read any of them? Tagging each title (either above or in the comments below) for further inspection. I read the first few pages of each on Amazon & they all seem great!

(Don‘t let the Litsy ratings immediately deter you; one or two have a pretty low “score” but only the smallest handful of reviews, so it‘s not really a fair assessment).

aeeklund I picked up The Enchanted because it was blurbed by Erin Morgenstern, and was completely blown away by it. I also really loved Girls at the Kingfisher Club. 6y
Velvetsun I have The Enchanted and read the first couple of chapters and it seems intriguing. Just have to be in the right head space for it, I think. 6y

Sorry...this one is not for me! I had high hopes with the first couple pages, but the narrative just didn‘t grasp me. I read about half of the book; it‘s time to move on to something else to read.

Lanmo, a golden snake, is a magical and powerful reaper. He travels all over ushering humans out of the world, with his white fangs. He can travel in a flash and is also a shapeshifter. He never really paid much attention to humans until he met a little girl named Mary. Mary is a clever and kindhearted little girl. See the rest of this review at: https://goo.gl/xRE1uR

This was so problematic for me, mostly caused by the fable format whose habitual simplicity of language and lesson can easily become a simplistic and dogmatic vision of the world. That certainly happens here, where apparently there are no grey areas. Wealthy People are Bad. Attractive Girls are Bullies and Uninteresting. Schools only want Right Answers. I know that these are deliberate exaggerations by Kennedy but it leaves me totally cold.

One day, while taking tiny steps in her garden Mary meets Lanmo, a beautiful golden snake with ruby red eyes. They become friends and he keeps her safe. Lanmo has to leave Mary at times to visit other humans and travels the world, he is death.

The story is so beautifully written, sad and heartwarming. A modern classic and a must read.

thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a fair and honest review

“‘No,‘ said the teacher. ‘We should be proving that we are clever so that the National Test Assessors can assess us, and when we have been assessed we can move on to our next assessment.‘”.....I think this sums up school quite well !

“‘Yes,‘ said the snake, ‘I am a snake.‘ And he smiled for an instant as much as someone can with no lips and flickered out an elegant bright red tongue that was forked at the end and licked the air around it. ‘You taste of sweets and soap and being good.‘”.....so cute

Redwritinghood Is this a YA book or is it for adults? It sounds interesting. 6y

The little snake, a grim reaper of sorts, meets and befriends a young girl. The snake, Lanmo, vows to protect the girl, Mary, and in the spirit of friendship, both of them look out for each other. Over Mary's life, we see how Mary's fortunes fall and watch as Lanmo finds himself with fewer reapings to perform as humans take each others' lives more and more often. This bittersweet fable had me weeping by the end. #netgalley
