The World Is a Narrow Bridge
The World Is a Narrow Bridge | Aaron Thier
7 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
From the author of Mr. Eternity, a darkly comic road novel about a millennial couple facing the ultimate question: how to live and love in an age of catastrophe. Young Miami couple Murphy and Eva have almost decided to have a baby when Yahweh, the Old Testament God, appears to Eva and makes an unwelcome demand: He wants her to be his prophet. He also wants her to manage his social media presence. Yahweh sends the two on a wild road trip across the country, making incomprehensible demands and mandating arcane rituals as they go. He gives them a hundred million dollars, but he asks them to use it to build a temple on top of a landfill. He forces them to endure a period of Biblical wandering in the deserts of the southwest. Along the way they are continually mistaken for another couple, a pair of North Carolina society people, and find themselves attending increasingly bizarre events in their names. At odds with their mission but helpless to disobey, Murphy and Eva search their surroundings for signs of a future they can have faith in. Through wry observations about the biggest things--cosmology and theology--and the smallest things--the joys and irritations of daily life--Thier questions the mysterious forces that shape our fates, and wonders how much free will we really have. Equal parts hilarious and poignant, The World Is a Narrow Bridge asks: What kind of hope can we pass on to the next generation in a frightening but beautiful world?

The protagonist of my current read is a poet by trade. She quickly mentioned Elizabeth Bishop, which reminded me that I‘ve been wanting to read more of her (other than “The Fish,” which every high-schooler in my hometown was made to read). Bishop is a Worcester, MA native (like me).

Anyway, I just read a single poem of hers, “The Moose,” & fell in love with the sound of the above piece.

“As the poet James Schuyler writes, “Now it‘s tomorrow, as usual.” The sun rises, a bird begins to scream in the yard, & it‘s time once again to undertake the complex business of daily life...They read the news with terror & incomprehension... Today is a day like any other.”

Assessing the above statements, which feel true & untrue concurrently right now. Life is mundane, & terrifying, & boring, & cozy, & historical, & full of nothing, &, &, &...

Hoping this will be #isolationreading come Monday, but for now...my library is still open for the foreseeable.

Let‘s see your fat #coronastack!

Monyca I loved Nothing to See Here! 5y
monalyisha Update: Full-time staff is now working 3 (alternating) days a week at the library (5 people at a time) & 2 additional days from home. We have very few part-time staff (who are all *very* part-time); sadly, I don‘t think they‘ll be paid. The building is closed to the public, though we are offering pickup of local holds (titles we own) at a “delivery window” between the hours of 10 & 5 — along with a slew of online programming. Stay safe, everyone! (edited) 5y

With all the secret shopping going on for holiday swaps, I thought it might be helpful for Littens to post their *most-wanted* books.

For the hashtag, I went with 8 (like the 8 nights of Hanukkah) mostly because it was more selective than 12 (a la the 12 days of Christmas)....but, I‘ll admit, also a little bit so that we could all tag it #Top8 & pretend we‘re on MySpace again. 🙃

I‘ll tag my #Top8 titles in the comments below! Show me yours! 🎁

SamanthaMarie MYSPACE!! I love it. Top 8 is much happier for books than for choosing friends hahaha. 6y
monalyisha Thanks @SamanthaMarie! It didn‘t exactly catch on but *I* thought it was a good idea! 😆🤷‍♀️ 6y
SamanthaMarie @monalyisha It truly was, I agree! You could always try another day. Different days produce different results I think haha. 6y

Mehso-so

Humor in novels can be a very tricky thing. I love a little campiness, but things can too easily go into slapstick. I read the description and was hoping for something along the lines of American Gods by Neil Gaiman, but it didn't quite hit that frequency for me. The premise of this book is campy on its face, but the book itself seems a little too self-aware for me. Ultimately, for me, it just didn't quite hit on all cylinders. #netgalley

Well, I‘m getting there!!! Down 7 netgalley books since the beginning of the month. I won‘t get them all read, but I think I can keep knocking out some more to make it more manageable. I think the next hashtag needs to be #backawayfromtherequestbutton !!!

FantasyChick You're my hero right now. I planned on getting my numbers down but I've only finished 2 and been approved for 13 more....let's not get to what I've requested since the beginning of the month 😲😲 #noimpulsecontrol 7y
BethFishReads That request button is dangerous 7y
ReadThisBookYall I keep finishing them and then not reviewing! I think, “well, I don‘t have time to write a full review for my blog so I‘ll just wait until this weekend.” Argh! 7y
