Herzog
Herzog | Saul Bellow
Herzog is alone, now that Madeleine has left him for his best friend. Solitary, in a crumbling house which he shares with rats, he is buffeted by a whirlwind of mental activity. People rumoured that his mind had collapsed. But was it true? Locked for days in the custody of his rambling memories, Herzog scrawls frantic letters which he never mails. His mind buzzes with conundrums and polemics, writing in a spectacular intellectual labyrinth. Is he crazy, or is he a genius?..

So the idea is to choose one fun book to read and one serious book. These are some of the candidates.

Ruthiella Personally I don‘t find Bellow fun! 😂 And The Magic Mountain? Wowza! 5mo
Therewillbebooks Ha! They would be in the serious category 5mo

Cinfhen Have never read Saul Bellow but I was friendly with a girl who claimed her grandfather and Saul were brothers ~ does that count?!? 6y
BarbaraBB Great pic! I didn‘t like the book much, did you? 6y
Billypar @Cinfhen Yes, it counts: I believe Bellow once stated:"To truly know my work, you need only to know my brother's granddaughter" ? 6y

Billypar @BarbaraBB I liked it, but didn't love it. I thought it worked as a character study- Herzog himself was fascinating to me. But it was also slow and never quite drew me in enough to make me recommend it too highly. 6y
Cinfhen Hahaha!! I thought I read that somewhere too!!! 😂😂😂 6y
Cathythoughts It‘s a long time sinse I heard this book mentioned ... I don‘t think I ever read it .. I actually can‘t even remember ( uh -oh 😬) 6y
Billypar @Cathythoughts I'm not sure it's one that's going to age well. Don't know specifically why, but you're right: not much buzz today for a novel that I think people were once more passionate about. 6y

Just woke up from a dream where I was walking around reading Herzog. That's it: just me wandering around with my nose in a book. For the record, I've not read Herzog, so maybe it's my subconscious telling me I should?

In every community there is a class of people profoundly dangerous to the rest. I don't mean the criminals. For them we have punitive sanctions. I mean the leaders. Invariably the most dangerous people seek the power.

With one long breath, caught and held in his chest, he fought his sadness over his solitary life. Don't cry, you idiot! Live or die, but don't poison everything...

A slow morning after a very late night. Home alone means blasting some of the great Satchmo and reading Herzog for the first time in 15 years.

Reading in the Delhi metro. Wondering why I can't work in an office.
