Married couple Jack and Ali Gardiner move to a self-sufficient commune in the English Fens, desperate for fresh start. The local village is known for the witches who once resided there and Rosalind House, where the commune has been established, is a former psychiatric home, with a disturbing history. When Jack and Ali arrive, a chain of unexpected and unexplained events is set off, and it becomes clear that they are not all that they seem. As the residents become twitchy, and the villagers suspicious, events from the past come back to haunt them, and someone is seeking retribution... At once an unnerving locked-room mystery, a chilling thriller and a dark and superbly wrought ghost story, The Lingering is an exceptionally plotted, terrifying and tantalisingly twisted novel by one of the most exciting authors in the genre. Quirky and cleverly plotted Sunday Mirror Dark and satisfying Daily Mail A compulsive read until the final, breathtaking page Elizabeth Haynes A forceful, gripping story that builds and builds the suspense until the stunning ending, which will leave readers gasping Random Things Through My Letterbox A must-read Steve Cavanagh

A book that had been sat on my shelf for a while but was an enjoyable horror/crime story. Certainly lots of cliche horror tropes, spooky old asylum, couple with secrets joining a cultish group in said horror house, and lots of creaking floorboards/cold rooms and hands round neck when in the bath. Bit of a daft ending but generally good fun.

LeahBergen Well, it certainly looks like you have a tasty reading setup there! And I see a green Virago peeking out… 😊 8mo
andrew61 @LeahBergen, yes, I'm mid general strike with the final part of the Storm jameson trilogy. The cover will be revealed soon. Nice spot, leah. 8mo

A modern take on Gothic horror, ghost story meets crime thriller. Ali and Jack join a commune set in the grounds of an old asylum. A slow burner, with some sinister aspects; diary entries from the past, the old medical equipment still in situ, and a disparate group of people all wanting to get away from reality.

Meredeez88 Ooh this sounds right up my alley! Thanks!! 4y

3.8⭐️ While I enjoyed this read, it‘s not quite what I expected. It did have a different take on a good Gothic novel, but the paranormal presents wasn‘t really there. In fact, you could remove the ghost all together and the story still would‘ve made sense, and you still would‘ve had an OK thriller novel. It wasn‘t bad, and I really did enjoy it.

This was spooky enough that I could not read it at night. You pretty much know what is going on, but you question why the entire time. The end of the story was confusing. I‘m not sure what happened completely.

It‘s been a minute since I posted a TBR, but I have one for October. One book is pending, because I don‘t know what it is until I meet for book club next weekend. Its @Roary47 pick this month, so I know it will be good.

Roary47 Meddling kids was pretty good. I remember laughing out loud a few times 4y

Unfortunately I did not like this. I didn't find any of the characters overally interesting and the story was a bit underwhelming. I was quite disappointed because the blurb looked good.
Plus one of the main characters was really annoying!

Disappointed by this one. I love a good ghost story but sadly this one didn‘t engage me and I didn‘t really care for any of the characters. It‘s beautifully written and it is definitely a sinister tale but I found it quite drawn out and too much of a slow burner. It certainly lives up to its title - ‘lingering‘. I didn‘t find it scary, it was more disturbing and weird than creepy. I so wanted to enjoy it but, sadly, it‘s just not my cup of tea.
