Turning Pages: My Life Story | Sonia Sotomayor
9 posts | 4 read | 6 to read
Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor tells her own story for young readers for the very first time! As the first Latina Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor has inspired young people around the world to reach for their dreams. But what inspired her? For young Sonia, the answer was books! They were her mirrors, her maps, her friends, and her teachers. They helped her to connect with her family in New York and in Puerto Rico, to deal with her diabetes diagnosis, to cope with her father's death, to uncover the secrets of the world, and to dream of a future for herself in which anything was possible. In Turning Pages, Justice Sotomayor shares that love of books with a new generation of readers, and inspires them to read and puzzle and dream for themselves. Accompanied by Lulu Delacre's vibrant art, this story of the Justice's life shows readers that the world is full of promise and possibility--all they need to do is turn the page. Praise for Turning Pages: * "A sincere and insightful autobiography that also demonstrates the power of the written word. A winning addition to libraries that serve young readers." --School Library Journal, starred review "A personal and appealing book made to inspire." --Booklist "A thoughtful introduction to both the power of reading and an inspiring role model." --Kirkus Reviews

Sotomayor discusses her love of books and the way books shaped her life in this children‘s biography. This is for older kids, but the illustrations spark imagination and help to solidify Sotomayor‘s words. It‘s so inspiring, and I could truly feel her joy in books and reading come through her words. #PictureBook #BBRC #LetterT

LibrarianRyan I like this. Litsy says I haven't read it, but I have. 1y

#LetsTravelAugust Day 14: Sonia Sotomayor is the first Latina to serve as an Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court, committed to doing what is #fair and just. I was deeply moved by how her entire life story is an ode to books and learning and reading. She perceived books as an ultimate guide to justice, a means of highlighting social injustices and how they can be put to right. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-jpt

I don‘t have time to review the gazillion children‘s books we read, but I wanted to put this one on your radar!

This beautiful picture book depicts Justice Sotomayor‘s remarkable life. She focuses on the importance of reading and learning as much as possible. It‘s really beautiful. 💚💚💚

These are my signed books from today. Sotomayor was limited in time, so no personalization, but she was a real pleasure. Rick Bragg wrote a birthday message in one book because I told him today was an early birthday present (it‘s not until next month). He was super nice, too. 💚 #southernfestivalofbooks

britt_brooke @LeahBergen I‘ve only read one of his books (so far), but listening to him speak and meeting him was a real pleasure. He‘s so funny, sometimes inappropriately so, which I love. 6y

Ok lots of security and no photos of the Justice allowed but I wanted to give a plug for her middle grade and young reader books. She was warm, generous, empathetic and with such a fabulous story of growing up Puerto Rican in New York and being diagnosed at age 7 with diabetes. She hugged all the kids who asked questions - my favorite was “what‘s it like to work with RBG” answer “I love her!” A rock star Justice and first latina on SCOTUS!

lynneamch Yes. Yes. Yes! She was. And ended up allowing pix with kids only. So gracious and inspiring. She says there are 2 things we all are obligated to do: vote and serve (jury duty). #sfb2018 #nashville 6y
Booksnchill @lynneamch right - thanks for adding this such an important message! 6y
