panI have never been less impressed with a true crime novel. Howard seems to harbor a crush on Howell throughout the book (going so far as to admit she asked him if he missed sex... something a married person probably shouldn‘t be asking a convicted serial killer). The information was repetitive and a good chunk of the book is spent telling us how much Howell hated prison food.
This book is unsettling. I wonder if the author is aware of how much Howell was emotionally manipulating her? The amount of sexual things he reveals to her is also unsettling, and I‘m vaguely curious about the things she said back (which is not printed, btw). She also blatantly refers to a transwoman as a man and says he killed “six women and one man”. Not digging her, honestly.
“I am a good guy, Anne,” he told me in one of our visits. “I‘m the guy who holds the door open for you at the Dollar Store.”
(He also murdered at least 7 women)
Decided to tackle some of my ARCs and started reading HIS GARDEN last night. William Devin Howell was convicted of killing seven people (most believed to be prostitutes and/or addicts) in 2003. He‘s considered to be Connecticut‘s most prolific serial killer.
Needless to say, seeing my baby boys cuddle lightened the mood.
pickThis started off as your run-of-the-mill true crime book. William Devin Howell was suspected of, and eventually pled guilty to, the rape and murder of seven prostitutes in Connecticut in 2003.
Where it took a turn to the more fascinating was when the author of this book befriended Howell. Her visits to him in prison eventually led to an odd friendship. This was unlike any true crime book I‘ve read before. #netgalley
