This was really hard to finish, good concept, I just didn‘t seem to care and found my self counting the pages until I was done

My reading slump continues (although I did finish The Plotters the other day by Un-Su Kim, and I quite liked it). I just got this from the library, and I have been looking forward to reading this one, so maybe it will help get me back into reading!

Mehso-so

3/5 - I finished this book today, but it took me forever to get into it. (Hence the picture from early December when I started reading it.) I loved Gentry‘s first book, but this one didn‘t work as well for me. Parts of it were suspenseful, but a lot of it was drawn out and the ending felt far-fetched. The social commentary in it is important, but for me that wasn‘t enough to make me love it. Ultimately it was just so-so. #jpbookreview #netgalley

Jess7 📚 2/52 | Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for allowing me to read an early electronic review copy of #LastWomanStanding by #AmyGentry in exchange for my honest review. This book published 1/15 and is available wherever books are sold. #thegreeneyedreader (edited) 6y
Jess7 Also — I think the reason I didn‘t love it was because I didn‘t have any feelings about the characters in this book. I didn‘t love, like, or hate any of them. I didn‘t think they were clever or interesting. For me whenever the plot is a bit slow, I really need the characters to evoke some type of emotion in me— be it hate or love, but frankly I just didn‘t care what happened to any of the people in this book. 6y
Megabooks Thanks for the honest, good review. I liked her first book, but I think I‘ll just wait on the library for this one. 6y
TorieStorieS I completely agree- it felt like two books forced together rather awkwardly... and I agree with your assessment of the characters and their likability!!! 6y

Narrator Dana, is a stand up comic returned from LA to TX, trying not to get stuck living on the #BoulevardOfBrokenDreams when she makes a new friend who changes everything... with more than a nod to Strangers on a Train, I kept waiting for this to take a more original turn, but the book splits its focus and loses its pacing as the book struggles to fall under the thriller that it‘s marketed as and being a societal commentary... #MusicalNewYear

Cinfhen Sorry this book didn‘t work for you. I wasn‘t a big fan of her first book 6y
TorieStorieS @Cinfhen Yeah- I had mixed feelings for her debut too... and when I realized I had overlooked this ARC, I felt bad for not reading it sooner... but in the end, I was just glad I made it to the end! 😬 6y
Jess7 This one didn‘t really work for me either. 6y

TorieStorieS @Jess7 Glad to know I‘m not alone!! 6y
TorieStorieS @vivastory Thanks- it just makes me all the more excited for my next read!!!😊 6y
vivastory That's true. Sometimes I think an occasional bad book is more worthwhile than a good one, because it is a reminder of everything that is important in fiction. 6y
Cinfhen I‘m always slightly relieved when I discover a book I can skip!!! 😝 6y

Sometimes it feels so dark just waking up every day as a woman in a woman‘s body. What we go through. What we have to live with. Groped, harassed, stalked, followed down dark alleys. It makes you paranoid. Except you‘re not really paranoid because there really are people out to get you. Men. Every woman I know has gone through something. Raped, assaulted, harassed, forced out of jobs. Trapped in abusive relationships. We talk about it w/ ea other.

Betty That‘s deep 6y
Weaponxgirl @Betty it is and the saddest thing I‘ve found is that a lot of us downplay what has happened to us. I know I‘ve had conversations where people are talking about being groped and followed, had a guy trying to get to close when they know you are very drunk in a predatory way but wasn‘t able to due to your friends. And we always think it wasn‘t that bad as we know it could be much much worse for us 6y
JHSiess @betty @weaponxgirl The book is an interesting exploration of revenge in the #MeToo era. A twisty, psychological thriller with a contemporary premise. Good selection for book clubs -- lots of discussion material. 6y

Betty @JHSiess stacked! 6y
Betty @Weaponxgirl I read something similar in Pantsuit Nation on FB today. “Been silenced my whole life. Someone else‘s ——- is worse than mine. Someone else‘s story about —— is more painful than mine...” 6y
Reggie Ok, I‘ve wanted to post about this for awhile because even in some of the flimsiest romance, I read last year, the MC was harassed by men on public transit enough that she felt she had to run from the situation. Part of me wonders why she put it in there but I know why, because it happens. In a lot of the books I‘ve read last year I‘ve ended up wondering, has it always sucked to be a woman? For the reasons you mention. I‘ve wanted to post 👇🏼 6y
Reggie About it for awhile but I figure the last thing women need is a guy complaining about why it sucks to be a woman. 6y
Weaponxgirl @Betty yes the fact that someone else has probably had a more painful experience than me has meant that I‘ve not talked about how much certain things have affected me in the past. I was once harassed by 3 men in one day to various degrees and I just did not want to go out anywhere for a while afterwards yet I didn‘t talk about it as I know others have things happen to them that would be deemed worse in some peoples eyes. It‘s not a 6y
Weaponxgirl @Betty competition and the sad thing is I don‘t know any woman who hasn‘t been harassed by a man. But conversely I wanted to be sensitive to others experience that they may not have talked about. I don‘t want to bring up something that could cause someone else pain 6y
Weaponxgirl @Reggie hey reggie from my perspective the best thing you can do as a man is listen and your obviously doing that. When I was in my 20s and used to go clubbing I‘ve had moments where a guy has grabbed my ass and I‘ve turned around and belted them and then had a male friend tell me that was an overreaction. For me that was worse than the groping itself in a lot of ways. It‘s not that I need a white knight but having a guy who will back you up means 6y
Weaponxgirl @Reggie a lot to me personally. And if we are honest the men that think that behaviour is acceptable will listen to another man more if he is telling him it‘s not. 6y
JHSiess Being sexually harassed is, for women in my generation, part of the experience of being female. I've also been sexually assaulted. It's just something that's understood among female friends. It shouldn't be!! #MeToo is part of the fight to change the status quo. But when 60 million people are willing to put a man who sexually assaults women & brags about it -- among other crimes -- in the White House . . . clearly, the fight's not over. 6y
