Nancy Drew #1
Nancy Drew #1 | Kelly Thompson
2 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
Nancy Drew is seventeen and good at everything...ESPECIALLY solving crimes. But her totally-in-control-and-obviously-running-perfectly-smooth-(but-not-really) life hits a snag when a mysterious message drags her back to the hometown she left behind. There she’ll have to find out which of her friends are still her friends, which are enemies, and who exactly is trying to kill her...and (hopefully) stop them before they succeed. KELLY THOMPSON (Hawkeye, Star Wars, Rogue & Gambit) and JENN ST-ONGE (Giant Days, The Misfits) team up to present an all-new modern spin on a classic mystery icon!

Last complaint and then I'm done: this is less a riveting, whodunnit mystery and more a journey through Nancy's internal dialogue. Bla. I'm super disappointed. I loved Dynamite's last ND series and was wildly excited for this new one cos it was an all-female creative team. But wowza I'm disappointed. Thompson created my favorite series of all time (the 2016 ghostbusters comic)--I expected so much more from her. 😞

Love Kelly Thompson, but honestly I'm not with the writing for this series. Every Nancy Drew story has that certain ~charm~ to it (you get what I mean, right?), no matter the story, era, or writer. This just hasn't got that charm. It reads like a try-hard way to get younger female comic readers into it. I'm all for modernizing old characters to make it relevant to the times, but this sounds like an adult trying to get younger approval.
