New and Selected Poems | Mary Oliver
9 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
Winner of the 1992 National Book Award for Poetry A New York Times Notable Book of the Year 1993 "One of the astonishing aspects of [Oliver's] work is the consistency of tone over this long period. What changes is an increased focus on nature and an increased precision with language that has made her one of our very best poets. . . .These poems sustain us rather than divert us. Although few poets have fewer human beings in their poems than Mary Oliver, it is ironic that few poets also go so far to help us forward."-Stephen Dobyns, The New York Times Book Review

Do you also hurry, half-dressed and barefoot, into the garden,
and softly,
and exclaiming of their dearness,
fill your arms with the white and pink flowers,
with their honeyed heaviness, their lush trembling,
their eagerness
to be wild and perfect for a moment, before they are
nothing, forever?
—from Peonies by Mary Oliver

MMFinck I so wish I enjoyed poetry. I have been moved by it before though, and when I have it‘s powerful and sticks with me. I think I prefer poetry about hardship?? (edited) 6y

anything
in your life
more wonderful

than the way the sun,
every evening
#relaxed and easy,
floats toward the horizon"

Lindy Lovely photo. I was in Nuwara Eliya in January 1979 but all I remember of it is the botanic garden and that it was chilly at night (a pleasant change). 6y
batsy @Lindy I love the cooler weather at night, definitely a welcome change :) And the garden was still a treat! 6y
