Forces of Nature
Forces of Nature | Brian Cox, Andrew Cohen
12 posts | 4 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
A breathtaking and beautiful exploration of our planet, this groundbreaking book accompanies the new BBC One TV series, providing the deepest answers to the simplest questions. What is motion? Why is every snowflake different? Why is life symmetrical? To answer these and many other questions, Professor Brian Cox uncovers some of the most extraordinary natural events on Earth and in the Universe and beyond. From the immensity of the Universe and the roundness of Earth to the form of every single snowflake, the forces of nature shape everything we see. Pushed to extremes, the results are astonishing. In seeking to understand the everyday world, the colours, structure, behaviour and history of our home, we develop the knowledge and techniques necessary to step beyond the everyday and approach the Universe beyond.Forces of Nature takes you to the great plains of the Serengeti, the volcanoes of Indonesia and the precipitous cliffs in Nepal, to the humpback whales of the Caribbean and the northern lights of the Arctic. Brian will answer questions on Earth that will illuminate our understanding of the Universe.Think you know our planet? Think again."

First 2 books of the #spookoweenreadathon @TheSpineView read and returned to the library.
Forces of Nature by Brian Cox- This was a great book. The science teacher in me was nodding along with most of this book, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Good Immigrant by Nikesh Shukla - Some really great stories.
Thanks to my school I'm glad I got to read it.

My brain is absolute mush now. Two physics books in a row? What was I thinking?! I blame SciManDan and his book club.
This book was a bit more advanced than The Ascent of Gravity. I‘m glad I read the other first. Cox also leans much more heavily on the mathematical equations, which are not my strong point, and I found my mind zoning out at times.
The layout of my copy is absolutely atrocious, it‘s one of the ugliest book insides I‘ve ⬇️

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm ever seen. There were huge chunks of blank space on pages to make room for little 2in diagrams. Then there were quote pulls placed several pages before the actual quote appeared in the text.
The information within is solid though, and despite my handicap with Math, I deepened my understanding of the universe. That‘s really all I ask of books like this. (Litsy wasn‘t working earlier, so this bit is being added late. 🤦‍♀️)

I‘m dying!! 😂🤣😂🤣

I‘m not on Twitter, but I have seen screenshots of people masquerading as historical figures, and I love it. 😅

I feel ya, Galileo, I feel ya.

Sent the hubby off to work while me and the cat snuggled under the covers with my books. Made sure my chickens were good and that the wild bird feeders were full then hightailed it right back inside. Mr. Nutters came to peruse my offerings shortly thereafter. 🐿 I hope everyone that has to venture out in this winter storm today is staying safe and warm!

Johanna414 It‘s not supposed to hit us until tonight, so I‘m planning an emergency library trip before then! 4y

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @dandy.punk Hehe, she was very grumpy about the cold yesterday and after this photo pretty much stayed buried under the fuzzy blankets for the rest of the day. 😅❤️ 4y

Worked better for me than the other book from the series I read -- I actually grasped a good proportion of the physics! (I understood all the biology, of course.) Cox does have an enthusiasm that helps a lot. Wonder if the TV series would work to explain relativity... Might help through providing visuals; being aphantasic, I'm a little stuck when someone says "picture xyz..." to start their example.

Yeesh. I followed the part about symmetry. Gravity and spherical planets and elliptical orbits all make sense now. But relativity. Nope. No way. Cannot compute.

LibrarianJen I can't math. I can do theory though so I like math as long as you don't throw numbers into it. 🤣 5y
shanaqui @LibrarianJen I can't math either (numbers jumble, for me) but I also can't follow equations most of the time! A bad scientist I make. 5y
