The Pharaoh's Daughter
The Pharaoh's Daughter: A Treasures of the Nile Novel | Mesu Andrews
8 posts | 9 read | 13 to read
Fear is the most fertile ground for faith. You will be called Anippe, daughter of the Nile. Do you like it? Without waiting for a reply, she pulls me into her squishy, round tummy for a hug. Im trying not to cry. Pharaohs daughters dont cry. When we make our way down the tiled hall, I try to stop at ummi Kiyas chamber. I know her spirit has flown yet I long for one more moment. Amenia pushes me past so I keep walking and dont look back. Like the waters of the Nile, I will flow. Anippe has grown up in the shadows of Egypts good god Pharaoh, aware that Anubis, god of the afterlife, may take her or her siblings at any moment. She watched him snatch her mother and infant brother during childbirth, a moment which awakens in her a terrible dread of ever bearing a child. Now she is to be become the bride of Sebak, a kind but quick-tempered Captain of Pharaoh Tuts army. In order to provide Sebak the heir he deserves and yet protect herself from the underworld gods, Anippe must launch a series of deceptions, even involving the Hebrew midwiveswomen ordered by Tut to drown the sons of their own people in the Nile. When she finds a baby floating in a basket on the great river, Anippe believes Egypts gods have answered her pleas, entrenching her more deeply in deception and placing her and her son Mehy, whom handmaiden Miriam calls Moses, in mortal danger. As bloodshed and savage politics shift the balance of power in Egypt, the gods reveal their fickle natures and Anippe wonders if her son, a boy of Hebrew blood, could one day become king. Or does the god of her Hebrew servants, the one they call El Shaddai, have a different planfor them all?

My Friday evening plans for a trip to the bookstore got put on hold due to chances of heavy rain. So it's a perfect night for reading! I love how this book begins each chapter with a piece of scripture 💜

Princess-Kingofkings Mesu researches Scripture so carefully. I always go back to read the Bible story after I've read one of her books. It is as if her books create a vision that helps me understand what might have happened in the Biblical story. 6y
CindyRene @Princess-Kingofkings yes 🙌 I am SO appreciating her writing and her research! Biblical fiction helps me glean more of the emotional side of what the people in the actual accounts must have experienced. I'm really enjoying Mesu's work! 6y
Crazeedi This is a new author for me! I must check her out! 6y

"She'd been terrified as Meryetaten-tasherit, betrayed as Anippe, and abandoned as Amira."

Pharaoh's Daughter, the first book of the Treasures of the Nile series, is a poignant tale about Anippe, the daughter of Pharaoh Akhenaten who later found and raised Moses as her own son.

✔ Great writing
✔ Lots of twists
✔ Fact and fiction

Rating: 5?

A retelling of the beginnings of Moses from the viewpoint of his mother.

In June I read a book that was the generation before this one (Nefertiti‘s sister Mutnodjmet) and it was weird reading from the opposite viewpoint. In Nefertiti, we are #teamay but in this book we are not. We are actually #teamhoremheb for most of the book. #egypt #moses
