Following the overwhelming success of AWKWARD and BRAVE, Svetlana Chmakova's award winning Berrybrook Middle School series continues with its next installment - CRUSH! Jorge seems to have it all together. He's big enough that nobody really messes with him, but he's also a genuinely sweet guy with a solid, reliable group of friends. The only time he ever really feels off his game is when he crosses paths with a certain girl... But when the group dynamic among the boys starts to shift, will Jorge be able to balance what his friends expect of him versus what he actually wants?

I love this series. The art style is wonderful, and the characters are complex and engaging. Each volume has a simple seeming plot that gets complicated by the social and emotional web that is being a middle schooler. I also love the inclusivity of background characters. I‘d love to see those characters pulled into lead roles more often! #Comic #MiddleSchool

More than 40 pages in and I just realized that every time there's a scene on the outdoor bleachers, you can see a little raccoon peeking out between the benches. I wasn't sure what it was when I finally noticed it. 😆
Edit: I've now noticed it in other places too, so it's not just hidden at the bleachers. Too fun!

Zoe-h I read those books! I think from what I remember that the author put the in as jokes for her husband? 4y

I'm getting some reading time in today. I have lots of stuff I could be doing, but it's cold and rain-snowing (sometimes it's just sleet) and there are two cozy Pomeranians in my lap, so I can't be more productive. Guess I'll just have to rest and relax 😉 #Cozy #ReadingCorner #Dogs

So this week's reading wasn't as good as the week before but I enjoyed the tagged book. Cute illustrations with a fun, relatable story. I read it after my daughter named it her favorite book. Harbor Me was also a good read but Jacqueline Woodson can do no wrong, IMO.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I love reading picks my nephew or nieces loved, such unique reads I never would have stumbled on myself most likely. 5y
EchoLogical @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Same here. I try to keep her reading willingly so I'll read what she recommends or we'll read something together. Currently working on 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @EchoLogical I understand that. I read the entire Series of Unfortunate Events with my nephew that way when he was in middle school, close enough we could talk about the plot, inching ahead so he‘d be motivated to catch-up and very careful not to get too far ahead that he could still beat me to the end of the book. He was a struggle to get to read anything at that age, so in HS when he said he liked a book from school, I usually read them. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @EchoLogical The Creature in the Pines looks really good from the description, by the way. 5y

This was by far the most relatable book out of the series for me out of the whole series that is nothing but relatable. I honestly love these books and I wish I had them when I was younger

Time to catch up on my last few books!

After proctoring the SATs all day a few Saturdays ago, this light middle grade graphic novel was just my speed! It was charming and I loved the illustrations. I especially loved the part at the end where the author described her creative process. Not sure why I haven‘t heard of her before since I love Raina Telgemeier and books like hers, but I will definitely read others by Chmakova!

There is SO MUCH good stuff in this book. Here, a few of the girls chopped their hair off for charity and everyone is freaking out. One boy even tells a girl she used to be pretty. This boy, however, knows it was for a good reason, recognizes he doesn‘t have any say in the matter, and still likes them anyway. This particular snippet made me cry, as my mom also had cancer and I cut my hair super short to honor her and also donated my ponytail. 5 ⭐️

I know it‘s a bit hard to read, but this is so so important. Screenshot and zoom in if you need to. I love that this is included in a middle grade graphic novel. There‘s so much going on in just a few panels. I truly hope that when my son read this, he took something away from it. It‘s increasingly imperative for kids to be aware of these things. All the vocab and concepts need to be normalized in discussion with our children.

Weaponxgirl That‘s amazing! ❤️ 6y

5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This GN has it all. A great guy, a lovely girl, feminist empowerment, Body anatomy, and even a little intrigue. I am completely enthralled with this book and now must read all the others by this author immediately. She does a great job of talking about consent and body positivity , and it's not just by the girl characters, but Jorge is totally on board as well. I loved everything about this book.

Loved it! This is the 3rd in the series & the first two—Awkward & Brave—are equally fabulous. Same group of middle school friends appear in all 3, each of which focus on a particular character. This is the story of Jorge who suddenly finds himself tongue tied every time he‘s around Jazmine. Does that mean he likes her? And if he does, what next? Friendships are under strain, gossip is rampant, bullies bully, there‘s a dance, & more! Recommended.

Tamra Thanks for posting! 6y
