What Remains of Her
What Remains of Her: A Novel | Eric Rickstad
8 posts | 6 read | 11 to read
From the New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Girls comes this chilling, harrowing thriller set in rural Vermont about a recluse who believes the young girl he's found in the woods is the reincarnation of his missing daughter, returned to help him solve her and his wife's disappearance. I wont say a word. Cross my heart and hope to die Jonah Baum, a professor of poetry at a local college in Vermont, sees his ordinary life come tumbling down when his wife and young daughter vanish from their home. No evidence of a kidnapping. No sign of murder. No proof that Rebecca didnt simply abandon her marriage. Just Sallys crude and chilling drawings, Jonahs little lies, and the sheriffs nagging fears that nothing is what it seems. For Sallys best friend, Lucinda, its something else. She trusts in Sally not to just disappear, not after theyve shared so many secretsespecially about the woods and what they saw there. But shell never tell. No one would believe her anyway. As the search for Rebecca and Sally intensifies, and as suspicion falls on Jonah, the disappearances become more relentlessly haunting than anyone can imagine. Because whats seen in the light of day is not nearly as terrifying as what remains hidden in the dark

Told from the viewpoints of Jonah (husband of the missing Rebecca & father of Sally, also missing), & Lucinda (Sally‘s childhood best friend now a deputy in their hometown).

It was billed as thrilling, but I found it drawn out & meandering. It was a long road to the final twist. 2⭐️

As a random pick on Hoopla, this was a pleasant surprise. A young child disappears on the 25th anniversary of another mother/daughter disappearance from a small Vermont town. Efforts to solve one crime lead to new revelations in the other, uncovering long buried secrets. Entertaining #crime novel that also incorporates some commentary on the good and bad sides of human nature. 3.5/5 ⭐️
