Little Lord Fauntleroy
Little Lord Fauntleroy | Francis Hodgson Burnett
In a shabby New York City side street in the mid-1880s, young Cedric Errol lives with his mother in genteel poverty after the death of his father, Captain Cedric Errol. One day, they are visited by an English lawyer with a message from Cedric's grandfather, the Earl of Dorincourt, an unruly millionaire who despises the United States. With the deaths of his father's elder brothers, Cedric has now inherited the title Lord Fauntleroy and is the heir to the earldom and a vast estate. Cedric's grandfather takes him to live in England and be educated as an English aristocrat. AUTHOR'S BIOGRAPHY = Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924) was a British-American novelist and playwright, best known for her stories for children. Her most famous childrens novels are The Secret Garden, A Little Princess and Little Lord Fauntleroy.

It was heartwarming and cute. Little Lord Fauntleroy is an American boy who finds out that he‘s the heir to earldom in Britain. He‘s a kindhearted boy that everyone loves and is better because of him, including the old Earl himself. It was a bit sickly sweet at times but overall enjoyable. And exciting that I own the first edition!

I absolutely loved this story, and I'm sure I'll be re-reading it many times in the future. Such a sweet tale to remind people that genuine humility and love for others will often bring out the best in people (even when that best isn't always easy to see) 💜 Very thankful for this story!

Sweet story. And everything turns out right in the end. Although, why exactly is Mr. Hobbs staying in England?

Such a gorgeous book 😍
I really loved the story and this cute kid. Such a wonderful story about love, friendship and how life can change everything. Definitely one of my favourite books within the last months. Thank you @TheBookHippie for that. 😍

Even if Christmas is already over, I dived in this cute story. I really loved the secret garden and I like this story pretty much until now. The little lord has already arrived in England and met his grandfather. 😊 @TheBookHippie hope to finish it in the next days. I ordered several 'children's books' yesterday and so I can join the February choice aswell 😍

I‘m so glad I read this children‘s classic. Such a delightful read about a little lord and how he was ‘jiggered‘ by his newfound earldom. Children‘s books are the best #inbetween reads.

The Secret Garden and A Little Princess were two of my favourites growing up and I can't believe I've never read this one! I'm glad I finally did. It is kind of saccharine as @merelybookish mentioned, but after some grim crime novels, it was just the kind of sweetness I needed 😁 Cedric, our little lord, is quite the amusing character. I was waiting for him to irritate me, but he didn't 😂 A cute read. #ChildrensClassicRead2019 @TheBookHippie

merelybookish That Cedric, he's so beautiful and graceful! 😛 This was between a pick and a so-so for me. Reading it as a kind if fairy tale helped. I also became interested in how Burnett wrote the story, since it's uncommon to have such a paragon of perfection as the main character. The old Earl was my fave character by the end. But I do agree that cover is gorgeous! 🙂 6y
merelybookish Have you done any reading around the book? I keep meaning to. I know it was massively popular but then there was a backlash of sorts. It's why the name Cedric ceased to be a viable name in North America, except in the African-American community. 6y
batsy @merelybookish That's so true, I did read it as kind of a fantastical fairy tale. And I do think there's an element of that, based on the tiny bit of Burnett's bio given in this edition (British-born, living in the US; the book as a kind of idealistic/nostalgic pining for the British class system?) I haven't read anything about the book but wanted to find a Burnett bio; have you read any? (And the elder Earl was a great character, I agree!) 6y
merelybookish @batsy No, I don't know much about her except I think she wrote a lot of books and many not for children. But that's what she is remembered for now. I expect her bio would be interesting! 6y

batsy @readordierachel Thanks 😘 6y
Centique I remember seeing a TV movie of this as a kid and being captivated. Must read the book! That cover looks stunning in the sun and against the flowers 😍 6y
batsy @Centique Thank you ❤️ I need to watch the movie, or maybe there's more than one? The book is so cute 😁 6y
BiblioLitten What a lovely cover! I read it online but I‘ll buy a copy for myself someday. Now I know I won‘t be disappointed if I reread The Secret Garden. I love how everything fell into place in the end. 😊💕 I agree with @merelybookish the Earl was my favourite! 6y
batsy @BiblioLitten I know what you mean, I've been nervous about rereading Garden & Princess! But I think if I sandwich it between my usual grim reads it'll be perfect 😁 6y

"Perhaps I got my spelling from them" ?

Maybe I went from grim Scandi-noir to bleak Swiss noir & in-between—the scented, beautiful, & depraved Genji who adopts the daughters of his dead lovers as a father figure & then, as those daughters grow to resemble their lovely mothers, he goes from Dad to "Damn, girl!"—maybe it's all of that, but I'm loving the change of pace in this sweet read for #ChildrensClassicRead2019 hosted by @TheBookHippie.

The book that launched a thousand pairs of knickerbockers.😁 Reading this for the children's classic readalong hosted by @TheBookHippie. A massive bestseller in its day (this is a poster for the 1888 Broadway production) about a little boy who #whenigrowup becomes an earl.
It's a bit on the saccharine side. 😬😜

Cinfhen That look!!! 😂😂😂 6y
LeahBergen It‘s soooo saccharine! I read (and adored) A Little Princess and The Secret Garden as a kid but only came to this one as an adult and ... yeah. 😆😆 6y
merelybookish @LeahBergen I loved bith those books! This one is different... Strange to have such a flawless main character. 🙄 6y
merelybookish @Crazeedi I think it was her most popular book back in the day! But not nearly as charming as The Secret Garden or Little Princess! 6y
merelybookish @sarahbarnes @BarbaraBB That's so cool! Reading it now I have to say it's hard to imagine a kid liking it. But obviously it's been beloved for years! I'm curious. Do you remember why you loved it? 6y
merelybookish @Cinfhen I know!! 😂 6y
BarbaraBB To be honest I have no idea. Reading the title in your post makes me remember that I read it when I was real young (like 7 or 8 years) as it was part of a series of children‘s books which you could borrow in the school‘s library. It was my favorite of that series, but I can‘t tell you why... 👵🏻 6y
sarahbarnes I‘m trying to remember exactly why I liked it so much...I think it was the fairy tale quality of the story. I must‘ve been a little sappy at the age when I read it, and not the cynical adult I am now. 😁 I might have to go back and look at the story again! 6y

Part 2 repost for @TheBookHippie :
I thought it would be fun to read Children‘s Classics for 2019. I have so enjoyed reading the Classics A to Z for 2018. Having an entire month for each classic gives time to explore the book, art and music related to it, time it was written in and movie if such exists. I look forward to reading this way!

1) Little Lord Fauntleroy - this is on German TV each winter, and as a kid I had to watch it every year.
2) shower? I slap the dirt off my back once a year. 👿 (morning, unless I was out and there were lots of smelly things around me, then I shower after getting home - sensitive nose)
3) don't have one
