This book was published in 1987 and is a Caldecott winner as well. The book follows Little Red Riding Hood as she ventures through the woods to visit her grandmother, only to encounter the sly and cunning wolf who has a wicked plan to eat them both. It is a classic fairy tale in children's literature and folklore.
I love this classic tale because its great for younger kids to understand that we should never trust strangers.
I love how the illustrator of this book uses dark colors in the pictures to give the effect of a dark forest of red riding hood being where she is not supposed to be and that there is going to be trouble.
I really like the timely folktale of Litte Red Riding Hood, having it been a story in which I read often growing up. But this specific retelling was not my favorite depiction of the story. In this retelling both Red Riding Hood and Grandma were eaten by the wolf. Despite being saved by a passing hunter in the end, I did not enjoy the use of such “violence“ in a children's book. In different versions, neither character is “killed“ which I prefer.
This story is an example of a folktale and a modern fantasy, both specific types of traditional literature. In this retelling of the traditional story, Red Riding Hood, despite having been told not to talk to strangers is fooled by the wolf. In result she and Grandma both end up being eaten alive. The two of them only to be saved by a passing hunter. The moral of the story is that we should never trust strangers despite how nice they may appear.
This tale is passed down to younger generations because the lesson of the story is super important but for very young children I get see the wolf scaring some kids.
Red Riding Hood written and illustrated by James Marshall is an adorable retelling of the classic tale. It was published in 2004. Red Riding Hood is a fairy tale because there are talking animals. The moral of this tale is to never talk to or trust strangers which is valuable to young children.
“Red Riding Hood promised to never, ever to speak to another stranger, charming manners or not.“
I would use “Red Riding Hood“ as an example of fairy tale traditional literature in my classroom to expose my young students to famous or classic books. I would also use this book to teach my students about the importance of following directions or rules meant to keep us safe, like not speaking to strangers.
“Red Riding Hood“ is one of the most famous and classic examples of a fairy tale under traditional literature. What makes this book a fairy tale is the use of good and bad (evil) characters, magic, a problem or obstacle the characters must face, a happy ending, and a moral or lesson to conclude the story with.
“What big eyes you have“ I picked this quote because I have always liked it when I read this folktale.
This book is great for younger elementary because of the moral of the story. These grades should be learning about these types of lessons as well as the folktales and what they mean for literature.
Red Riding Hood by James Marshall. Folktale. The moral of this story is to not talk to strangers even if they seem kind. This story is about red riding hood and how she was sent to visit her grandmother. Mom told her not to talk to any strangers but, she did.
One afternoon, Red Riding Hood's mother called to her. “Granny isn't feeling up to snuff today,“ she said “so I've baked her favorite custard as a little surprise. Be a good girl and take it to her, will you?“ Red Riding Hood was delighted. She loved going to Granny's- even though it meant crossing the deep, dark woods.
The moment in the beginning where Red Riding Hood is helping her mother bake goodies in the kitchen to take to her grandmother. This reminds me of back in the day baking with my mother and grandma.
This story is an old folktale told from many years ago. Little Red Riding Hood is instructed to go to her grandmothers house and visit her since she's sick. On her way to her grandmother's she has to go through the forest. She comes upon a big bad wolf who tries to take her basket of goodies. Once she arrives at her grandmothers house she finds an unexpected surprise.
This is a good book to read when talking about life lessons. It shows not to talk to strangers in a fun silly way and students are easily engaged with the reading.
“Red Riding Hood promised never, ever to speak to another stranger, charming manners or not.“
Red Riding Hood is a folk tale by James Marshall and was published in 1987. Red Riding Hood walks through the scary forest to get to her grandmother's house and meets a hungry wolf. But the heroism of a hunter saves the little girl and Grandma from the wolf's clutches. The simple text and colorful illustrations bring this classic alive for a new generation of readers.
With the nonstop subzero temperatures outside I am very glad I stocked up on books from the #library. Me and my little muffin are staying in and reading.
This TL picture book is a great storytelling strategy. Most students may already know the story so they will follow along easily. For those who may not have heard of the folktale, it will be captivating. After the storytelling, you can have copies of the book available for students to IR later on in the day/week. I would also have the students create a story map afterward. #ucflae3414f19
A retold classic TL teaches readers the importance of being obedient to authority figures and cautious of talking to strangers, as they just might gobble you and your grandmother right up! RT would be a great teaching strategy to help bring this story to life. With the use of 5 students representing Little Red Riding Hood, her mother, the granny, the wolf, and the hunter, this TL can be made an enjoyable experience for everyone!
