Glass and Gardens
Glass and Gardens: Solarpunk Summers | Sarena Ulibarri
3 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
Solarpunk is a type of optimistic science fiction that imagines a future founded on renewable energies. The seventeen stories in this volume are not boring utopias¿they grapple with real issues such as the future and ethics of our food sources, the connection or disconnection between technology and nature, and the interpersonal conflicts that arise no matter how peaceful the world is. In these pages you¿ll find a guerilla art installation in Milan, a murder mystery set in a weather manipulation facility, and a world where you are judged by the glow of your solar nanite implants. From an opal mine in Australia to the seed vault at Svalbard, from a wheat farm in Kansas to a crocodile ranch in Malaysia, these are stories of adaptation, ingenuity, and optimism for the future of our world and others. For readers who are tired of dystopias and apocalypses, these visions of a brighter future will be a breath of fresh air.

Only got through two books for May, and the second was this anthology of Solarpunk stories. First time reading properly in the genre, and excited for more stories (especially with the Winters collection) and adding to my own writing through the concepts here.

Honestly, this thesis! Ths candidate's shallow understanding grates, and their unsophisticated word choice is becoming an issue. He just called a character stupid. Ouf. Defence Thursday. #academiclife

Loving this #solarpunk collection of short stories! This up-and-coming new genre had me at "optimistic, environmentally-conscious science fiction." ?

The dog is under the blanket. He came scratching on my door (I'm allergic, so he's not allowed in my room) demanding snuggles, so I had to comply. ? #dogsoflitsy #bostonterriersoflitsy #Pippin

8little_paws What is solarpunk? 6y
Caterina @8little_paws It's a new subgenre within science fiction that's a little loosely defined right now but basically is 1) optimistic (as opposed to dystopian) and 2) has something to do with the environment/a future with renewable energy/climate change/etc. Most of the stories take place in a future where climate change has forced renewable energy and other new, environmental-type tech! It's super cool! 6y
