The Judge Hunter
The Judge Hunter | Christopher Buckley
12 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
The latest comic novel from Christopher Buckley, a hapless Englishman embarks on a dangerous mission to the New World in pursuit of two judges who helped murder a king. London, 1664. Twenty years after the English revolution, the monarchy has been restored and Charles II sits on the throne. The men who conspired to kill his father are either dead or disappeared. Baltasar Balty St. Michel is twenty-four and has no skills and no employment. He gets by on handouts from his brother-in-law Samuel Pepys, an officer in the kings navy. Fed up with his needy relative, Pepys offers Balty a job in the New World. He is to track down two missing judges who were responsible for the execution of the last king, Charles I. When Baltys ship arrives in Boston, he finds a strange country filled with fundamentalist Puritans, saintly Quakers, warring tribes of Indians, and rogues of every stripe. Helped by a man named Huncks, an agent of the Crown with a mysterious past, Balty travels colonial America in search of the missing judges. Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic, Samuel Pepys prepares for a war with the Dutch that fears England has no chance of winning. Christopher Buckleys enchanting new novel spins adventure, comedy, political intrigue, and romance against a historical backdrop with real-life characters like Charles II, John Winthrop, and Peter Stuyvesant. Buckleys wit is as sharp as ever as he takes readers to seventeenth-century London and New England. We visit the bawdy court of Charles II, Boston under the strict Puritan rule, and New Amsterdam back when Manhattan was a half-wild outpost on the edge of an unmapped continent. The Judge Hunter is a smart and swiftly plotted novel that transports readers to a new world.

A terrific jaunt across English and New England history: a nitwit is sent to the colonies to hunt down two judges who‘d signed King Charles I‘s death warrant and instead he stumbles into far bigger, interesting, and terrifying intrigues. A unique take on the earliest history of New York, in which the larger facts are true but the smaller pieces are a fun (& sad) imagining of what happened behind the scenes. Highly recommended. #letterJ #litsyatoz

Pepys plays an important part in the tagged book, so I decided to Wiki him. I found this excerpt from his diary about the plague in London, proving history continually repeats itself.

A bit more fun: “Thirsty work, vexing Puritans.”

Who‘d of thought to write a humorous book about the puritans? Well here it is! Heaven knows they need some levity.

I‘m enjoying this book and its entertaining jargon. Take this example:

“I‘m to keep you un-et by catamounts…”

In other words: “I‘m to keep the wildcats from eating you…”

I can‘t lose sight of my #litsyatoz challenge with so few letters left in the alphabet. I‘ve always managed to squeeze every last letter of the alphabet in every year I‘ve done the challenge. So I‘m moving on to the tagged book for #letterJ setting aside my next #readingafrica2022 book I‘d chosen.

I‘m making great progress with my #Litsyatoz challenge. I‘ve read books that start with A-M except for the #LetterJ. So hopefully I will get around to reading the tagged book soon.

KristiAhlers What a fun challenge for you. 2y
Texreader @KristiAhlers It‘s my longest running challenge. I‘ve been doing it the last four years. The “treasure hunt” you mentioned can be one of the best parts of these challenges. But also what a sense of accomplishment 2y

One more challenge list—my remaining letters for #litsyatoz2022. I‘ve never been this close to finishing the #litsyatoz challenge this early in the year (& I hope I didn‘t just jinx it). Obviously I have books lined up and ready to go! This will be my fifth year doing this challenge so I‘m very excited to finish it again this year (hopefully). @BookishMarginalia

Nute That‘s amazing, Karen. Good luck! 3y
Texreader @Nute Thank you so much for all your kind comments! I think about you daily and compose letters in my head to you. I‘m in a lengthy letter writing slump-I‘m sure you‘ve figured that out-and it makes me sad because I am missing our correspondence. I promise to snap out of it someday and resume. Btw. Husband is in your hometown this week on business! So all the more I‘m thinking of you. 3y
Texreader @Nute I‘m having surgery on my right elbow in two weeks so I clearly won‘t be writing for awhile after that!! 😬 3y

Though known more for his contemporary political statire, this book is actually a work of historical fiction. Set in 1660s Colonial America, specifically New England and New Amsterdam, it is a reasonably accurate portrayal of the period, and its often outsized personalities. It is well written with a dry and often understated humor.

Saw this book at Barnes and Noble today and took a photo so I‘d remember to put it on my wishlist.

I have a new client way across town that requires me to be at meetings one-two times a week. It‘s 5 minutes from B&N so since I was running early I stopped in for a few minutes. I think I‘m going to like visiting this client! 🤗

This was ok. I liked the historical aspects and the relationship between Balty and Huncks. Buckley did well with their development and kept me going with the shorter chapters and the "what's next" factor within the story. I ventured away from my norm with this one. I'm just a sucker for WWI and WWII so I'm sure I'll be jumping right back into one of those soon ?
