Mehso-so

I enjoyed it (not just 'cause I'm a Wessex girl living in Gloucester!) but it has serious problems. Firstly, it's page 140 before Aethelflaed comes to the fore: much of the book is actually about her male relatives. Secondly, it relies heavily upon conjecture. Thirdly (my personal bugbear), it *badly* needs a proofreader. It reads as if composed on speech-to-text software and not checked subsequently. Not very professional of you, Amberley books!

quietlycuriouskate Persistent confusion between an/and, them/then, bought/brought; missing prepositions, references that don't match up with their notes; inconsistent dates... 4y

Æthelflæd was the daughter of King Alfred the Great, and wife of Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians; after her husband‘s death, she continued as Lady of the Mercians, and sent an army to capture Derby, the first of the Five Boroughs of Danelaw to fall to the English. With her husband, she built a new minster in my home town of Gloucester, named St Oswald‘s Priory, where she was later buried.

Atrociously edited -- words missing from sentences, etc etc. Very speculative. An archaeological find (the clasp from a book) is mentioned, and the idea that it might have belonged to Aethelflaed, but there's no dating for the clasp, nothing to suggest it should really be associated with her, and is basically just filler.

The book is mostly about the menfolk around her. The more I think about it, the more meh I am...

This feels rather padded out, but I more or less expected that from a book about an Anglo-Saxon woman. Even the lives of kings in this period are often speculative.

It's not the most thrilling narration, but it gets the job done. Mostly about Alfred so far.

Christmas #bookhaul
That feeling of being *seen* (in a good way!). My bird-loving, crocheting, poetry-reading/writing self with one foot in the Dark Ages is very happy! 😊
Thank you @TrishB for William Blake: did you know my username is a Blake reference? Thank you @Caroline2 for the abundance of bookmarks.
* The Warrior Queen in question is Aethelflaed, Alfred the Great's daughter: she was a big deal around here.

tpixie Freak #bookhaul! ♥️📚♥️ 6y

I‘m questioning my existence. Deep, gut-wrenching anxiety grips my stomach like a vice and twists my heart. Time is ticking til crunch time and I‘m just waiting. Ugh. This is not an attempt at creative writing - this is my reality at the moment. God! I am such an impulsive fool. 🙄😣#History #nonfiction #anglosaxon #darkages #middleages #britishhistory

Sophoclessweetheart @miralunasbooknook It‘s a great one isn‘t it? One of my favourite Pratchetts. I‘m feeling a bit better today but still quite low. I‘m hoping it‘s hormones. 😣🖤💋 7y
