Children of the Mind
Children of the Mind | Orson Scott Card
Orson Scott Card returns at last to the story of Ender Wiggin, the child hero of the Hugo and Nebula award winner Ender's Game, who as a man found a way to redeem the Xenocide of his youth and restore the Hive Queen to life. Now his adopted world, Lusitania, is threatened by the same planet-destroying weapon that he himself used so many thousands of years before. Lusitania is home to three sentient species: the Pequeninos, a strange race native to Lusitania; a large colony of humans; and the Hive Queen, brought there by Ender. But the Starways Congress fears Lusitania and a strange virus that it harbors, and they have gathered a fleet to destroy the planet. Ender's oldest friend, Jane, the computer intelligence that has evolved with him over three thousand years, allowed the Starways Congress to discover her existence when she tried to stop the fleet. Now they are trying to kill her as well, by shutting down the network of computers and ansibles in which she lives. They are afraid of her, and of her control over all human communications. Jane can save the three sentient races of Lusitania. She has learned how to move ships outside the universe, and then instantly back to a different world, abolishing the light-speed limit. But it takes all the processing power available to her, and the Starways Congress is shutting down the Net world by world. Soon she will not be able to move the ships. But there is hope: during the first trip outside, Ender's mind briefly took control and created two new beings - replicas of his brother Peter, who was the Hegemon, and his sister Valentine. These two children of Ender's mind, together with his adopted children from Lusitania, are racing against time todiscover new worlds, to influence the Starways Congress to recall the fleet, and to save Jane by finding a home for her disembodied intelligence once the Human Network is closed off to her.

I'm forcing myself to finish this, but only out of sheer stubbornness. If you love Orson Scott Card, stay away from this one. It's 350 pages of repetitive drivel and inane pseudo-philosophy. Not even in the same realm as the rest of the series. If you haven't tried Card yet, don't let this review discourage you! The rest of this series (Ender's Game, Speaker for the Dead, and Xenocide) are fantastic.

ErinSBecker Thank you! I've been on Goodreads for years but just heard of Litsy yesterday. I'm excited to join the conversations here! 5y

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Speaker for the Dead is one of my favorite books ever (may skip this one though - thanks for the heads up) 5y
ErinSBecker @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Me too! But this one really flies off the handle. Super dissapointing. Have you read Xenocide and the Shadow series? 5y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Yes! First 2 of the Shadow series and Xenocide (though it‘s been a while). I actually have read Children of the Mind but completely forgot that I had read it (maybe that‘s best 😂) 5y

#QuotsyJune19 Day 26: #Modern and the ancient in one photo. I took this photo while I was teaching educators and school leaders in Bahrain back in 2009. During one of our weekends, being Friday and Saturday, we went around and visited historical sites. Work week begins on Sunday.

“Just getting through the day without killing someone can be an achievement.”

Words of wisdom, no matter I‘m having weird dreams!

Home and sick and can‘t even really focus on listening to a story, but my eyes can‘t look at a book and, eh to tv. But my cat stays by my side.

All the stories are fiction, what matters is, which fiction you believe.

Anyone who has made it this far will most likely enjoy this satisfying conclusion. While not as profound as xenocide, it sure was a great adventure riding alongside so many characters and aliens I‘ve grown to know and love.

I‘ve completed a childhood goal of mine, finding out what happens after Enders game and I‘m just filled with lots and lots of love for this universe.

Photo from the speaker for the dead comic. I can‘t wait to collect these!!

I suck at writing reviews but here goes. Even though I didn't think it was quite as good as the rest of the Ender Quartet, I think it was a satisfying enough conclusion to the series. It was a bit slow in places, but it still kept me interested until the end. Overall, I enjoyed this book & give it a 3.5/5 stars. This was my "C" pick for #LitsyAtoZ2018 & my "About Space/Astronauts" choice for #LRC2018 (a bit of a stretch, but close enough?)

I'm determined to complete the #LitsyAtoZ2018 challenge & can FINALLY say I'm making progress! I finished my X pick, Xenocide, and just started my new choice for C. I decided to finish Ender's Saga & choose new books for letters E, T, & Y instead of reading Eddings' The Dreamers series. With the end of the year closing in, I have to improvise! I suppose if I scrap my original list I can use some of the books from my #TBR that I read this year? 🤔

BookishMarginalia Yes, you can! 6y
Miss_Kim I have 5 more to read but I don‘t think I‘ll finish ... O, Q, X, Y, Z. 😢 6y

It was definitely slow for a while but started getting exciting and kept up the pace to the end. Better than Xenocide but I felt like the rest of the Quintet never matched the draw of Ender's Game.

This book, while good, wasn't quite on par with the first three books in the series.
This line was strikingly beautiful, though.
