Adding this to my completed list!
Now, Hergé is writing his Tintins in occupied Belgium so the politics moves away from the anti-German sentiments that were allegorised via evil characters in the previous 2 books. This is a thematic remake of “Cigars”: drug smuggling, desert setting. From here the books start to become classics. “Crab” introduces the character I loved more than Tintin as a kid: Captain Haddock. He‘s not fully developed but he‘s a more lovable drunk than my stepdad
I borrowed this because it was the first to feature Captain Haddock. Loved it! It featured boats AND planes, so I was especially happy.
#ShutdownReadathon round 2 book 3
Hurray for Haddock!!
The Captain finally makes his drunken appearance in a liver-bursting whirlwind of whisky-quaffing, profanity, loutishness, maudlin self-pity & violent assault! The perfect foil for Tintin's bland earnestness.
While played for laughs, Captain Haddock's alcoholism is also shown as being a bad thing: he frequently endangers Tintin's life & several times almost scuppers the investigation - so we can take a moral lesson from that.
When the 7yo was picking his reward for completing the library‘s summer reading programme I convinced him to pick this book - the only Tintin comic available - partly because I wanted to read it too. Now everyone wants a turn with this book!
Unfortunately, I didn't get through this before it had to be returned to the library, but I'm definitely going to check it back out.
I put off reading it (I maxed out my renewals), thinking I would need to slog through with a dictionary, but it goes pretty quickly, even for someone with VERY minimal knowledge of French. The pictures give context and help me remember what words mean as I read. Learning is fun kids! 😂😂
Mothers, just thinking of you is enough to put us back on the straight and narrow. 😂 Happy Mother's Day! ❤️
Another series I couldn't get enough of was Tintin. I devoured every copy our local library had plus whatever copies I could get ordered in. I loved Snowy, the Captain & the twins but Tintin himself was my hero, I wanted to be him. Rich, adventurous & no parents to stop him from following his dreams. #LizsLibraryLoves
Has everything I love about Tintin INCLUDING the introduction of my favorite character, Captain Haddock! ☺️
