Summer - A Novel
Summer - A Novel | Edith Wharton
9 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
This book tells the story of eighteen-year-old Charity Royall, a girl who leads a dull life as a librarian in the small town of Dormor. She is the ward of Dormor's premier citizen Mr. Royall who, after the death of his wife, asks for her hand in marriage a proposal that she refuses. A chance meeting with an architect called Lucius Harney ignites a romance that is continually fought by Mr. Royall, and what transpires is a tale of sexual-awakening, lost love, and false promises. Published in 1917, Summer is one of Edith Wharton's two novels set in New England, and is not to be missed by fans and collectors of her seminal work. This antique text has been elected for modern republication due to its immense literary value, and we are proud to republish it now complete with a new prefatory biography of the author.

I‘m glad this ended up being the first book I finished during the new year. The characters weren‘t particularly lovable, but that didn‘t put me off. The descriptions of place were so incredible that I had a much more vivid mental picture of this than I sometimes do when reading. And I kept being viscerally transported back to my own youth as I read. The transporting reading experience made this feel very special.

JamieArc You are introducing me to the most beautiful editions 😍😍😍 2y
IndoorDame @JamieArc I do have a weakness for searching out pretty editions of classics to add to my collection 🥰 2y

Cinfhen That cover is JUST GORGEOUS 🥰OMG! 2y
IndoorDame @Cinfhen the artist who did the cover has some very faint black and white versions of her artwork illustrating several pages with pull out quotes. She‘s apparently a huge Wharton fan and her work definitely speaks to the vibe of the novel. 2y

When I first started this I assumed it would be a quick read at only 150 pages, and wondered why it was referred to as a novel and not a novella. But it was a slow thoughtful read that took me almost a week and had so much in it to consider that I‘m definitely thinking about it like a novel now that I‘m done. #lastfirst @BookNAround

BookNAround I like Wharton a lot and that cover is simply gorgeous. 2y

“She had always thought of love as something confused and #furtive, and he made it as bright and open as the summer air.”

Pickpick

A young orphaned woman, who was raised by relatives suffers because of pride and small town societal mores. Standard Wharton themes, but an enjoyable read.

1. Summer by Edith Wharton
2. Swimming While Breathing - invisible gills maybe? I'd also need boosted immunity. If I were Aquawoman I could hang out with you-know-who. 😋
3. Cancer - no wonder I want swimming powers.
4. Work at the library
5. #friyayintro actually by now it's #saturyay is that a thing?
