A life-affirming graphic novel about two women--one a widow, the other recovering from a horrible breakup--neither of whom knows a way to move forward. A moving and intimate LGBTQ graphic novel about two women, both of whom are trying to put the pieces of their lives back together. Still smarting years after a horrible breakup, Rayanne diligently buries herself in her work. Aside from work, she has her cat. And other than her cat, she has her crushes: crushes that she prides herself on being able to resist. Then unexpectedly, one of her crushes begins to affect her more than the others, and threatens to upset the delicate balance of her carefully controlled life. Ali is still feeling lost and numb almost a year after the death of her wife. Then one ordinary day something extraordinary happens: she is ambushed by her attraction to another woman that is both invigorating and fantastically inappropriate. Whether she's ready for it or not, it stirs up feelings Ali didn't think she was capable of having anymore. Funny, moving, and full of heart, Forward is a graphic novel that explores the parameters of second chances and the tricky emotions of grief, fear, vulnerability, and desire.

A tender story of grief and emerging romance set in the #lesbian community in Victoria, BC. I could relate to so much in this #graphicnovel! These characters are people I recognize. The dialogue is spot on, and so is the narrative pacing. The art is strongest in its portrayal of the urban landscape and layouts that show the passage of time. Watercolour in muted tones suit the nuanced layers of emotion in the story. #lgbtq #canadianauthor

I love it when contemporary realism captures private moments so well, like curling up on the floor in sadness, and talking to a cat. #graphicnovel #lgbtq

I love the sense of movement in this full page panel as Rayanne arrives at work, greeting everyone. It also captures so many details of the cubicle office environment: the motivational posters on the wall; plants, coffee mugs and snapshots personalizing work spaces; spare shoes or a bike helmet under a desk; the ease of slipping over to talk to a colleague at a nearby cubicle.

KCorter Oh wow, that panel is incredible! 6y

jmofo Oooh that is nice. Have you read Logicimix? One of my favorite two page spreads is in that book. 6y

jmofo @Lindy do you remember the meandering conversation in the garden? Wonderful. Have you read Munch? It‘s pretty fun and interesting in its varied styles within one book. (There‘s an English translation but Listy doesn‘t know.) 6y
Lindy @jmofo Yes, I like the garden part of Logicomix. I haven‘t read Munch and saw that it‘s at my library so I‘ve placed it on hold. Stay tuned! 6y
jmofo @Lindy hooray!!! Are there any you suggest? 6y
jmofo No! I just saw this on a shelf at B&N. I‘ll check it out! Thanks! 🤓 6y

A great graphic novel! It felt very authentic to white west coast middle age lesbian culture in a way I think only an author representing their own culture can be. It's about two women both trying to move forward in their lives (one from the death of her wife, the other from a self-imposed exile from dating after a bad relationship). It was a bit sad, but also sexy and hopeful. It made me nostalgic for when I lived in Victoria (where it's set).
