Promised Land: A Novel | Martin Fletcher
6 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
"Martin Fletcher, who headed up NBC TVs Tel Aviv News Bureau, knows his territory and it shows on every page. Promised Land is a great sweeping epic, reminiscent of Leon Uris Exodus; a moving story of triumph and tragedy, new love and historic hate, expertly told by a cast of unforgettable characters. Fletchers writing is superb and rises to the level of importance that this story demands and deserves. Historical novels dont get much better than Promised Land." Nelson DeMille, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Cuban Affair Promised Land is the sweeping saga of two brothers and the woman they love, a devastating love triangle set against the tumultuous founding of Israel. The story begins when fourteen-year-old Peter is sent west to America to escape the growing horror of Nazi Germany. But his younger brother Arie and their entire family are sent east to the death camps. Only Arie survives. The brothers reunite in the nascent Jewish state, where Arie becomes a businessman and one of the richest men in Israel while Peter becomes a top Mossad agent heading some of Israels most vital espionage operations. One brother builds Israel, the other protects it. But they also fall in love with the same woman, Tamara, a lonely Jewish refugee from Cairo. And over the next two decades, as their new homeland faces extraordinary obstacles that could destroy it, the brothers intrigues and jealousies threaten to tear their new lives apart. Promised Land is at once the gripping tale of a struggling family and an epic about a struggling nation.

Pickpick

I‘ve had this book in my TBR for a long time. I wasn‘t sure if it would be that good so I just delayed reading it. Well I was very wrong & actually really liked it. It had a good plot, some romance, some conflict, some mystery, & some history. I wish there was a more defined ending for the main characters but overall it was a good book.

I liked parts of this historical fiction set in the early days of the State of Israel. The author is a veteran newsman, so the details are interesting and spot on. But the romances fell flat for me. And the ending was a miss as well—too many loose ends and yet still rushed. A weak ⭐️⭐️⭐️

tammysue Terrific review, Barbara! :) 6y
Cinfhen Felt the same way! I think I ALMOST gave this a Pan ... I‘m not reading Martin Fletcher any longer. He should stick to reporting. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen I wouldn‘t have panned it, but I def won‘t jump to read him again. Any suggestions on books with the similar historical time period? 6y

Cinfhen I‘ll need to think of more “modern” reads 🤔 6y

Is it still an ARC when the book has been out for months? I have GOT to catch up my shelves in the next few weeks. Starting with the one published the longest ago.

Samplergal I, too, am very far behind. I‘m in too many book clubs and challenges. We should have a challenge in April to work on the ARCs. #CleanupOnARCAisle 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Samplergal I need a challenge like that. We go on vacation on the 21st and I don‘t want the oldest ARCs hanging over me while we relax! (edited) 6y

#NetGalley A historical novelization on the early days of Israel‘s Statehood. A young country formed by pioneers, innovators, immigrants and survivors ~ people who had endured horrors & lost so much. Now it‘s up to these people to create a new home. I enjoyed the historical component of this book, however the romantic plot fell short. I found the writing awkward & stilted. Two brothers, one girl ~ leaving each brother wondering if #SheLovesYou
