Bullied To Death
Bullied To Death: A Story of Bullying, Social Media, and the Suicide of Sherokee Harriman | Judith A. Yates
4 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
Fourteen-year-old Sherokee Harriman drove a knife into her stomach as her alleged bullies watched. Perhaps it was an accident. Perhaps there was a sinister truth ...The story of Sherokees death flew through social media; it reveals bullying exists within the family, in the mental health care system, the hallways of the educational system, and growing within us all.

Sherokee Harriman was a 14 year old who couldn‘t find the bright side. She tragically ended her life by stabbing herself in the stomach in front of some peers that had been bullying her. Unfortunately, while bullying was a part of her life, there were many issues that led to the end of her tragic life. A drug addicted mother, absent father, sexual abuse, and on and on.

I think the subtitle of this one is a bit misleading, as I don‘t think “social media” needs to be there. The author used social media in her research, as well as texts between Sherokee and her family and friends (in addition to interviews and plenty of other research). However, it is a sad story of a mentally ill girl who just couldn‘t seem to get a break. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin Chapters near the end include some stats on bullying and suicide, so at that point it gets away a bit from Sherokee‘s story, specifically. But, still interesting. 7y

Teen suicide is always a tough subject and I think this author managed to effectively bring awareness not only to bullying but also to question a lot of underlying issues that may have contributed to this teen's horrifying solution. Very well researched eye opener, not only to bullying but also to mental illness, cracks in the system and a young girl who just wanted to fit in 😔

Happy Saturday Littens! Kids are all still in bed so I'm taking my sweet time this morning. I've got my coffee, something undistracting playing on the tv and my first of many #ARCs that I plan to get caught up on this month. All the makings of a good weekend 😊
