This book comes through again with a blurb on the Mendoza Codex--an Aztec codex created 14 years after the Spanish conquest of Mexico in 1521. It describes life in 14th century Mexico. The blurb in the book is about wine that had regulations for drinking-however older men were exempt due to their age & having grandchildren, so they could be 'merry.'

I don't have any penny dreadful, but my 1976 copy of Readers Digest Strange Stories, Amazing Facts mentions at least two of the subjects of these sensational stories or comics. Varney the Vampire and Spring-Heeled Jack, the Terror of London. This book and especially the stranger and scarier stories in it gave me hours of entertainment growing up.😱

More retro than old-it published in 1976 & had a cover at one point like the one pictured, but I think I wore it out with ❤️🤗 When my mom downsized to an apartment years ago she sent it to me. I kept the post-it & Parade magazine article inside because she was always tagging stuff & sending me clipped articles. Next week is 3 years since I lost her-it's still hard.😥
