Slowly progressing with Proust. In The Captive, part 1, Albertine and Marcel are living together. Now that she is completely in his possession, he thinks he can no longer love her and he realizes what he is missing because of their relationship. On the other hand he is obsessively jealous when they‘re apart and afraid she‘ll cheat on him. Lying in bed he tries to control both their lives.

LeahBergen Is this the dollhouse that‘s featured in The Miniaturist? 6y
BarbaraBB @Liz_M Haha no but I brought it with me to finish it in the museum‘s garden afterwards! 6y
BarbaraBB @JenniferP I am liking and dreading it simultaneously! How I admire you that you could finish it so fast. Are you reading another ‘project‘ at the moment? 6y
BarbaraBB @LeahBergen No this is another one. Petronella Oortman‘s dollhouse (the one in The Miniaturist) is in the same room though. 6y
LeahBergen @BarbaraBB So very cool. 😍 6y
Michael_Gee I like your picture 6y
JenniferP @BarbaraBB no, no project at the moment. I think I need one for next year though - I like having something to give my reading some direction. 6y
BarbaraBB @JenniferP I have started Trollope‘s Palliser novels. Much much easier than Proust and very enjoyable. If you haven‘t read him I can recommend it! 6y
JenniferP @BarbaraBB I love Trollope! I‘ve read all the Pallisers, the Barchester series (my favorites), and a few stand-alones. Enjoy!!! 6y
BarbaraBB @JenniferP Maybe your reviews gave me the idea to read him too! Good to know that after the Pallisers I can go straight on to the Barchester 😉. This may take a few years! Have you also read 6y
JenniferP I have not read A Dance to the Music of Time - but that‘s a good project idea! 6y
BarbaraBB @JenniferP It is! You should read it anyway for the #1001books 😉 6y

This is how I finished The Captive, in the coziest place possible! While I can understand the narrator‘s toxic obsession with Albertine to be enough to dissuade some readers, I found the dynamic between his jealous monitoring and her inscrutability compelling, if at times repetitive. The parallel dissolution of Charlus and Morel is far more dramatic. If for no other reason, read for the descriptions of art and memory.

Sitting in the zero gravity chair at work, which makes me 😴 but Proust has moments that wake me up and make me 🤔

I am starting volume 5 of In Search of Lost Times.
In this book the whole gang moves from the French coast to Paris again, where they will do exactly the same as they did at the coast: #cometogether and look at and talk about eachother!
And yet it is somehow entertaining to be part of this, as a reader. #heyjune

GabrielleDubois Could you please tell me who's the painter from the cover? 7y
BarbaraBB @GabrielleDubois Yes, it is Wout Muller. 7y
GabrielleDubois @BarbaraBB Thanks. I didn't know this painter, I went to check on the web. It's not my kind of painting. This said, Proust isn't the author I prefer too! 😊 7y

BarbaraBB @GabrielleDubois completely agree on both 😉, but I‘ve challenged myself to read Proust....! 7y
arubabookwoman I got half way through vol 4, Sodom and Gomorrah, about 4 years ago, having faithfully read about 25 pages or so daily, but then stopped. I don‘t know why, because although I found it difficult I was enjoying it. The problem now is that I feel I must reread from the beginning if I want to complete it. 7y
arubabookwoman By the way, when I was reading it I bought and used a lovely book called Paintings in Proust which reproduced and discussed many of the artworks Proust references in the books. 7y
GabrielleDubois @BarbaraBB Ah! That's a good thing. You must know what it's like to know if you like it or not! 7y
GabrielleDubois @arubabookwoman The book about the paintings referenced in Proust books must be interesting... 7y
Cinfhen Proust and the Beatles...I love it 😍 7y
Taylor Um EXCUSE ME how did you get ahead of me?? 7y
BarbaraBB @Taylor LOL, I‘ve started Proust in 2017 and am reading very slowly. But I do make progress 😉 7y
BarbaraBB @arubabookwoman Thanks. I will look for that as there are many references to paintings. 7y
