Tu: A Novel | Patricia Grace
5 posts | 4 read | 11 to read
Tu is proud of his name the Maori god of war. But for the returned soldier there's a shadow over his own war experience with the Maori Battalion in Italy. Three young men from the one family went to war, but only one returned Tu is the sole survivor. Now, when his young niece and nephew come to him to find out what happened, Tu is brought face to face with the past. What really happened to the three brothers as the Maori Battalion fought in the hills and valleys of Italy is contained in the pages of his war journal, and this he now decides to give to his niece and nephew. Patricia Grace has drawn on the war experiences of her father and other relatives and ventured into new territory by writing about the world of war and soldiers. The result is a novel of great authenticity and high drama from one of our finest storytellers.

With much thanks to @Centique + @ReadingEnvy for an incredible read which is definitely 5*. The story of 3 maori brothers who as part of the NZ regiment are deeply involved in the harrowing Italian front in ww2 was told from the perspective of yngr br Tu as a narrative of the war and a reflection on their early life for his niece and nephew. Capturing the voice of a soldier it is a wonderful book and I am so glad i could discover this author. 👇

andrew61 Reminded me a little of the booker winner A narrow road to the deep north and like that story it is a stark reminder of the horror of war. 5y
Centique Yay! So glad that someone else enjoyed it as much as I did 😍👍 5y
andrew61 @Centique its one of those books that you put down but want to pick up again. Looked at the authors history and she wrote it with her father's story in mind. Thanks again and I'll be looking for some more of her books soon. ☺ 5y
ReadingEnvy Awesome I'd like to read this one too 5y

I'd never heard of this book until @Centique and @ReadingEnvy disused it on jenny's podcast recently. I'll finish it tomorrow and review it but i keep reading bits i want to share and this stood out. It is an incredible story which captures the voice of a soldier experiencing horrors which seem alarmingly routine with astonishing skill.

Centique I‘m so glad you‘re enjoying it! 5y
ReadingEnvy Wow that is vivid indeed 5y

This book really affected me. In many ways it‘s an homage to the Maori Battalion - a battalion in WW2 who fought not just for the reasons we all know about, but also for the “honour of the people” - to gain respect back in their own land. It‘s an insight into the racism here in NZ and into the hearts and culture of Maori. A story of three very different brothers, told simply in the vernacular of the youngest, only 17 and off to war.

I‘m loving this book. It‘s the 1930s; this quote is after Pita (rural born and Maori) and his family have moved into the city.

“Belonging to the club was like an end to starvation, somewhere to go where he didn‘t feel so backward, so ignorant, so up-in-a-tree.”

#getmovin #noexcuses

One of my literary “sins” is never having read a book by Patricia Grace, who is New Zealand‘s foremost Maori female author. #noexcuses any more, just getting on and doing this! (And it‘s great so far 😊)

Cinfhen Cool! A total new to me author! Thanks for sharing 😊 6y
