I'm enjoying this Gene Luen Yang trend of building on older comic stories, superhero origins (especially updating them to be more inclusive, not racist, and/or calling out the racism. 😬) The author's note in the back really added to my reading experience, don't skip it!
Not my fave art style/palette but I can see how it hearkens back to a more vintage look for evoking the golden age of comics. Warning: racial slurs, death on page.

My February reads were more of a mixed bag than January. Some books I loved. Some that I really should have DNFed. But I discovered Jackie Lau's romances, finally read (and loved) the two Novik fairy tale-ish novels, finished Muderbot (❤️❤️❤️) and had my heart ripped out by Illegal.

#ANewChapter Day 3: The #Shadow Hero shows dialogues and Liew‘s trademark style with its total lack of self-consciousness evidenced in its unapologetic humor (oft-times self-deprecating) and its capacity to not take itself too seriously. Hank is the only superhero (that I know of, at least) who brings his own mother as back-up as he goes looking for bad guys. How could you possibly not adore him? My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-aiG

The Shadow Hero, a book by Gene Luen Yang and Sonny Liew loosely based on the short-lived golden age #comic "The Green Turtle." The Green Turtle was made by Chu Hing, one of the first Asian Americans to work in the American #comics industry, and Yang thinks that Hing wanted the Green Turtle to be Asian American as well. Yang speculates that Hing never let the Green Turtle's face show because his publisher thought an Asian superhero wouldn't sell.

I was just browsing around Overdrive and found this beauty. It's a graphic novel featuring an Asian superhero. I had the pleasure of meeting Gene Luen Yang at a comic con and he was very nice. I told him I loved his work on Avatar. Hope this one is good. #diversereads in comics count!

Another great graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang! Creating his own origin story for the short-lived Golden Age super hero the Green Turtle, Yang crafts an adventure that is both heartwarming and humorous. The author's note and Blazing Comics #1 help the reader to better understand the history behind the character. #2017Book20 #graphicnovel #diversebooks #ownvoices #asianbooks
