This little known novel by Swiss author Boye was published between Brave New World & 1984, Kallocain takes its title after the drug which is developed & is named after the creator/narrator. Kallocain will not only compel people to tell the truth, but will reveal their thoughts/feelings. Although I have read other explorations of individuality vs community in dystopians, Boye's poetic & mesmerizing monologues (CONT)

vivastory of those subjected to Kallocain injections & their visions of a better world made this stand out. (edited) 2w

During the #NYRBBookClub discussion dystopian novels were mentioned. A good reminder to post about this recent book mail. Published midway between Brave New World & 1984, this Swiss Novel is set in a World State where a drug is discovered that compels the users to tell the truth. I hope to read this one soon. I discovered this on a book blog & it's def. an under the radar Penguin. What other lesser known Penguin Classic novels would you rec?

BarbaraBB I browsed the Penguin Classics Top 100. I have read many of them but ones I haven‘t but really want to is the dystopian The Chrysalids by John Wyndham. And since you ask for recommendations I‘d go for (not dystopian!) 3y
vivastory @BarbaraBB Thanks for the recommendation. Stacked! I agree about wanting to read Chrysalids. For some reason I always forget that's a NYRB book, too (edited) 3y
BarbaraBB I didn‘t know either! 3y

1) Nope
2) The tagged book, which I ordered as soon as I read about it yesterday. Also, Comyns' Vet's Daughter for #NYRBBookClub Speaking of NYRB, my other 2 anticipated October releases are War of the Worlds with Gorey illustrations & Collected Ghost Stories of Edith Wharton. Oh, & of course the next book in the Manawaka series.
Thanks for the tags @Eggs @RaeLovesToRead

LeahBergen Ahh, lovely. I have both the Gorey-illustrated War of the Worlds and Wharton‘s ghost stories - but in non-NYRB editions. 😊 3y
TheSpineView Thanks for playing! 🖤🎃🧡📖📚 3y
vivastory @LeahBergen I have been looking forward to the Wharton for months. 3y

Pickpick

Leo Kall is a chemist who invented a truth serum. In a world where the State owns everything, for example your work, your children, they now can access even your thoughts. This is a true classic and I LOVE it. One of my favorites! And Karin Boye, LOVE HER!!! If you haven't read this, please do ❤️

Orbeck33 That cut-out of the author is so cool! 8y
MyBookLife @Orbeck33 I know!! I also have one of Astrid Lindgren. They make them of other authors too. Everything from Shakespeare to Hemingway to Selma Lagerlöf. I have of two women though ??✌?️ 8y
MyBookLife @Orbeck33 Ps they are bookends, but I love them so much so I have them standing like this so I can see them 😍 8y
