This is a story that can only be told in a whisper ... In the remote outback of Western Australia during the Second World War, English anthropologist Nicholas Keene and his wife, Stella, raise a lonely child, Perdita. Her upbringing is far from ordinary: in a shack in the wilderness, with a distant father burying himself in books and an unstable mother whose knowledge of Shakespeare forms the backbone of the girl's limited education. Emotionally adrift, Perdita becomes friends with a deaf and mute boy, Billy, and an Aboriginal girl, Mary. Perdita and Mary come to call one another sister and to share a very special bond. They are content with life in this remote corner of the globe, until a terrible event lays waste to their lives. Through this exquisite story of Perdita's troubled childhood, Gail Jones explores the values of friendship, loyalty and sacrifice with a brilliance that has already earned her numerous accolades for her previous novels, Dreams of Speaking and Sixty Lights.

Bailedbailed

Made quick work of my December #bookspin pick by…not finishing it. I knew this was headed for the DNF pile when I had to look up 10 words in the first few pages, and the unstable mother displayed a penchant for speaking in Shakespeare quotes. I have nothing against learning new words, but it felt very much like a book that was going to prioritize style over story, and I just don‘t have the energy for that kind of thing right now. Next!

TheAromaofBooks At least it's off the list!! 2d

vivastory I have both Fresh Water & Treasure Island on my TBR shelves. Looking forward to both! 2y
Sapphire @vivastory I really enjoyed fresh water for flowers. I moved between print and audio because I had the audio before I realized it was Europa. I think you will like the complexity of the characters and how their humanity is treated 2y

Hi #jb friends!! I wanted to stop in and say I am so incredibly sorry I haven‘t sent out any recent notes. It‘s been two months!! Since I homeschool, my days are just eaten away by four different kids, plus meals and chores and activities, and by the end of it all I am SO exhausted. I PROMISE I will get back to you all, and will do so soon!! #justbecause #pleasedonthateme

Mehso-so

I did not like this book when I started it. To quote one of my fellow #LMPBC Group P readers, it was “raw”. About 55% in, I became fascinated with the story and indigenous people of Australia. There is a lot going on in this novel — snakes, Shakespeare, religion/spirituality, abuse, mental illness, murder, dysfunctional families, and so much more. I now think it was well worth the read but I would hesitate to recommend it to anyone. It‘s too sad.

arubabookwoman Definitely sad! “Sorry” it didn‘t work for you. 6y
suvata @arubabookwoman No, I did ultimately like the book. I just don‘t think that everyone would. I gave it three stars on GoodReads, so that‘s about average. 6y
arubabookwoman I think I would give it 4 stars, which is what it is on LT. It definitely is a downer, but I tend to like sad books. I‘m also fascinated with Australia. 6y

arubabookwoman Hope you like it. It‘s a sad and serious book, but I think Gail Jones is a beautiful writer and I would like to read more of her books after reading this. 6y
suvata @arubabookwoman Sometimes, “sad and serious” is exactly what I want to read! 6y

Reading my #LMPBC book and enjoying it. It‘s going slowly as I try to think about it and make comments. Since I‘ve never done this before I‘m not sure if I‘m commenting too much or to little. I hope my reading partners are ready to visit Australia! @suvata @Laura317 @collegecatlady
