Don't Panic
Don't Panic: ISIS, Terror and Today's Middle East | Gwynne Dyer
3 posts | 1 read
It took a quarter-century of bad strategy, including more than a dozen years of Western air attacks and invasions in the Middle East, to bring the so-called "Islamic State" into existence. Can we somehow manage to avoid the well-trodden path of overreacting to the provocations of Islamist extremists? With the rise of ISIS, a new style of terrorism that publicly gloats over acts of extreme cruelty has reawakened the fears of the global audience. But in Don't Panic, Gwynne Dyer argues that the advent of "Islamic State" and its clones does not substantially raise the risk of major terrorist attacks in Western countries. It does, however, pose a grave threat to the Arab countries of the Middle East. In Don't Panic, Dyer first explains why the Middle East has become the global capital of terrorism. He then examines how terrorist organisations in the Arab world have evolved over time, with particular emphasis on the events of the past fifteen years and the current situation in Syria and Iraq. And in the end Dyer departs from his long-standing position that foreign interventions always make matters worse to argue that a little military intervention of the right kind may avert a genocide in Syria. "When my information changes, I alter my conclusions," said John Maynard Keynes. "What do you do, sir?" From the Trade Paperback edition.

‼️Looking for some Litsy support. Seemingly out of the blue, I began having panic attacks in October. I have a doctor and counselor helping me through, but things aren‘t seeming to improve. It‘s isolating because no one in my real life circle understands what I‘m experiencing. Just putting myself out there in case anyone has advice on how to tackle panic and anxiety. Thanks Litsy community, just posting it has helped. ❤️

Suet624 Gosh, I‘m sorry. I always use CBD when I start getting anxious but I doubt that‘s going to be enough for you. Stay in touch with us! 4y
Hestapleton Hi yup me too. Anxiety blows. Medication and therapy really help me, but it does get worse before it gets better, unfortunately. Therapy is hard work. Some other things that have helped me are lavender oil (the scent is super soothing) and having a really set self-care list I can reference - things that always make me feel a bit better, like a bubble bath, face mask, favorite tea, comforting books, etc. Sending you lots of hugs. 💜 4y
Bookwormjillk No advice but sending you hugs 4y

Tattooedteacher I hear ya! I also use medication and therapy. I also use a variety of essential oils... vetiver really helps me. And meditation. 4y
Lauram I‘m sorry you‘re experiencing this. I often struggle with anxiety too and it‘s difficult when loved ones get exasperated or frustrated with me. I did learn a few cognitive strategies that worked for me but I wouldn‘t necessarily recommend them to anyone else. Hugs 🤗 4y
wideeyedreader Oh no! I‘m so sorry to hear that, anxiety sucks. I‘ve had struggles with anxiety since high school, and honestly the main that helped me was therapy and medication—journaling can be a great help, though, as well as meditation/deep breathing! 4y
CarolynM No advice but solidarity. My menopausal anxiety is mild but it's no fun. I'm sorry you're suffering and lacking non professional support. Sending hugs🤗 4y
JenReadsAlot I'm a therapist and use/teach a lot of deep breathing techniques as well as CBT. Be kind to yourself because anxiety does suck. 4y
NovelGirl82 I am so sorry. I don‘t really have any advice, but just chiming in to let you know that you have support. 💚 4y
Butterfinger I think you are courageous in sharing. We'll be here for you. Keep us posted. Positive thoughts and prayers. 4y
Sharpeipup A friend focuses on what he can see, hear, and touch. That seems to help him in the moment. Big hugs. 4y
Thousand-Lives @Suet624 Thank you. I appreciate you taking the time to respond, it means a lot. 4y
Thousand-Lives @Hestapleton Oof, gets worse before it gets better is scary but whatever it takes to get better I will do. I love the idea of a self-care list. Thanks for your thoughtful response. Sorry you deal with anxiety as well. Sending hugs back to you. 4y
Thousand-Lives @Bookwormjillk Thank you. Your kindness is so helpful. 4y

bookishdawg I have anxiety too and if you process through books like I do, there are two I really recommend... “Burnout” by Emily and Amelia Nagoski and “The Happiness Trap” by Russ Harris. Hang in there... you will find your way through ❤️ 4y
Thousand-Lives @bookishdawg Thank you so much! I do process through books so I appreciate these recommendations. Thanks for your kind words, they help. 4y
CoffeeK8 I‘m so sorry you‘re going through this, panic attacks are so tricky. I don‘t have a specific suggestion but I suggest looking into mindfulness, there‘s lots of good resources and you can find something that works for you. (edited) 4y
Thousand-Lives @CoffeeK8 Thank you, they really are tricky and seem to come out of nowhere for me when they strike. I will look into mindfulness, thanks so much for reaching out. 4y

Panic didn't really set in until I couldn't find my library cards to add back into Libby/Overdrive apps so I could finish my audiobook that's due in three days.

*breathes*

Only #Littens understand. Everyone else I know thought I was ridiculous for destroying the house to find library cards.

sprainedbrain Omg that would have been total panic for me! 6y
SMayWrites Oh yes. Pure panic. The house would have looked like a tornado hit 6y

I‘m not gonna be around during the downtime because there‘s nothing to do while migration happens, but I‘ll be around here and across the various platforms and presences once we come back. Get some sleep, Littens, you aren‘t gonna miss out on anything, I promise! In the meantime, we have the downtime lounge: http://www.librarything.com/topic/289278 and also check out my homemade angel hair pasta, seared scallops, and lemon pepper glaze. #litsyonlt
