The Tough Guide to Fantasyland
The Tough Guide to Fantasyland | Diana Wynne Jones
25 posts | 18 read | 20 to read
The definitive edition of a cult classic by the legendary Diana Wynne Jones. Imagine that all fantasy novels--the ones featuring dragons, knights, wizards, and magic--are set in the same place. That place is called Fantasyland. The Tough Guide to Fantasyland is your travel guide, a handbook to everything you might find: Evil, the Dark Lord, Stew, Boots (but not Socks), and what passes for Economics and Ecology. Both a hilarious send-up of the cliches of the genre and an indispensable guide for writers, The Tough Guide to Fantasyland has been nearly impossible to find for years. Now this cult classic is back, and readers can experience Diana Wynne Jones at her very best: incisive, funny, and wildly imaginative. This is the definitive edition of The Tough Guide, featuring a new map, an entirely new design, and additional material written for it by Diana Wynne Jones. Listen up #LMPBC #GroupQ ! I‘ve currently got 12 books I‘m trying to narrow down before I present a selection for y‘all to look at. In the meantime, I want to rec a book.

When I saw quirky fantasy, this was the first book I thought of. I decided against it, mostly because it‘s not actually a story. But it is hilarious and worth a look. Styled as a tour guide book for a High Fantasy world, everything is lovingly made fun of. And it is a delight.

LibrarianRyan I've seen it and i agree! 3y

DNF.

It just wasn't my type of a book. I would have enjoyed this 10+ years ago.

TheAromaofBooks I know a lot of people love DWJ unreservedly, but she's kind of hit or miss for me. 4y
AllisonM89 @TheAromaofBooks I enjoyed Howl's Moving Castle and found most of Castle in the Air to be frustrating. I think I'm just over the excessive "making fun of tropes"... This book is much more of a novelty item that would make a fabulous gag gift for the right fantasy geek. It's hard to just read this one straight through... 4y

1. 🎧 The Lady‘s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy, 📕 My Lady‘s Choosing, 📗 Sense and Sensibility
2. Tagged is my favorite pick me up book! Think travel guide, but for an amalgamation of all fantasy worlds! 😆
3. “Are you going to make the sensible choice and return to Cairo like I ask? Or are you going to go see that Delphine gets her just deserts with me?”

#adventrecommends day 13!

If you‘re into classic high fantasy you should read this book. It‘s parody, but you can tell it comes from a place of love - mostly because it‘s got that level of “it‘s funny ‘cos it‘s true!” that can only be achieved by someone who knows the tropes extremely well.

I have so many unread first in a series books laying around and even more on my tbr 😳. I'm still longing for a new fantasy series to get into after Oathbringer a few weeks ago so please recommend your favorite fantasy series and trilogies! Any fantasy subgenre is fine, I just want something to keep me immersed this winter!

Pickpick

Having read a fair number of fantasy books of questionable writing when I was younger I found this tongue in cheek guide to be a highly amusing read and dead on when poking fun at various tropes.

#rereads I am a compulsive rereader. Once I've discovered a world I love, I will read it over and over again until the book falls apart. This is the only book where I will read pieces of it every week though. Every time I need a smile or a stress free break, I whip this out. What makes this whole thing even better is that she then wrote a novel set in this fantasy land. #booktober @RealLifeReading

So glad I bought this a few weeks ago. Any page I open to is good for a laugh and sure way to improve any lackluster day I have.
