Whisky Galore
Whisky Galore | Sir Compton Mackenzie
1 post | 2 read | 3 to read
It's 1943 and the war has brought rationing to the Hebridean islands of Great and Little Todday. When food is in short supply, it is bad enough, but when the whisky runs out, it looks like the end of the world. Morale is at rock bottom. George Campbell needs a wee dram to give him the courage to stand up to his mother and marry Catriona. The priest, the doctor and, of course, the landlord at the inn are all having a very thin time of it. There's no conversation, no jolity, no fun - until a shipwreck off the coast brings a piece of extraordinary good fortune...

I‘ve never read anything by this author and thought I‘d take a chance on this 1947 comedic novel set in Scotland (I always thought I‘d like to start with his Monarch of the Glen, but 🤷🏻‍♀️). Has anyone read it? How about you, @Crinoline_Laphroaig ? 😆

Melissa_J Well that one looks like good fun 😂 6y

Leftcoastzen This book by him, very early, was a big influence on Fitzgerald and Orwell. 6y
Theaelizabet Great finds! I‘ve heard this is somewhat of a regional classic. Made into a movie, I think? 6y
LeahBergen @Leftcoastzen Really? That‘s cool! 6y
LeahBergen @Theaelizabet Yes, I read that it WAS made into a (pretty successful) movie. 6y
