A Trip to the Beach
A Trip to the Beach | Melinda Blanchard, Robert Blanchard
6 posts | 9 read | 2 to read
This is the true story of a trip to the beach that never ends. It's about a husband and wife who escape civilization to build a small restaurant on an island paradise -- and discover that even paradise has its pitfalls. It's a story filled with calamities and comedy, culinary disasters and triumphs, and indelible portraits of people who live and work on a sliver of beauty set in the Caribbean Sea. It's about the maddening, exhausting, outlandish complications of trying to live the simple life -- and the joy that comes when you somehow pull it off. The story begins when Bob and Melinda Blanchard sell their successful Vermont food business and decide, perhaps impulsively, to get away from it all. Why not open a beach bar and grill on Anguilla, their favorite Caribbean island? One thing leads to another and the little grill turns into an enchanting restaurant that quickly draws four-star reviews and a celebrity-studded clientele eager for Melinda's delectable cooking. Amid the frenetic pace of the Christmas "high season," the Blanchards and their kitchen staff -- Clinton and Ozzie, the dancing sous-chefs; Shabby, the master lobster-wrangler; Bug, the dish-washing comedian -- come together like a crack drill team. And even in the midst of hilarious pandemonium, there are moments of bliss. As the Blanchards learn to adapt to island time, they become ever more deeply attached to the quirky rhythms and customs of their new home. Until disaster strikes: Hurricane Luis, a category-4 storm with two-hundred-mile-an-hour gusts, devastates Anguilla. Bob and Melinda survey the wreckage of their beloved restaurant and wonder whether leaving Anguilla, with its innumerable challenges, would be any easier than walking out on each other. Affectionate, seductive, and very funny, A Trip to the Beach is a love letter to a place that becomes both home and escape.

Mehso-so

The Blanchards decide to move from Vermont to #Anguilla and start a restaurant. I liked the descriptions of the island and the food and the interactions they had with the community. Admittedly, parts of the narrative really dragged for me, and it would have also been nice to hear Bob‘s voice in the narrative. But, I did have to look up the restaurant‘s website to see images of the place today (and the staff!). #ReadingTheAmericas2023

Librarybelle Thanks for putting this on my radar, @squirrelbrain and @Hooked_on_books ! 1y
Hooked_on_books I‘m glad you liked parts of it! It kind of gave me hives how flippant they were while setting it up. Spending without keeping track of the money?!? No!!!! 1y

A big thanks to @squirrelbrain for posting on this book set in #Anguilla, as I really enjoyed it. The Blanchards loved the island and decided somewhat spontaneously to move there and start a restaurant. Here, they detail their experience and we get to know some of the island residents.

Librarybelle It sounds like such a good book - your review and @squirrelbrain ‘s review really makes me want to read it sooner rather than later! 2y
squirrelbrain Oh I‘m so glad you liked it Holly! @Librarybelle - if you can‘t get hold of it I‘ll gladly send you my copy. (In a few weeks as I passed it to my Mum to read) 2y
Librarybelle @squirrelbrain Thanks, but a library near me has it! I was very excited to see it there, so I‘ll be able to get it next week. 2y
squirrelbrain That‘s great! @Librarybelle 2y

There‘s a shortage of books set on #anguilla but I found this used copy for only 75p and I‘m so glad I did.

It follows the authors as they set up a restaurant on the island and it‘s just my kind of ‘travelogue‘ - all about the lovely people that they meet. Hurricane Luis felt a bit tagged on at the end but still a really nice, easy, read.

As well as being for #readingtheamericas23 this is also my pick for #titlesandtunes #islandvibes

Read4life I met the Blanchards years ago when they were promoting a book. They gave people they spoke to polished, colored glass with smiley faces on them. They said to keep it in your pocket and hold it or feel it whenever you felt overwhelmed, unhappy, in need of a reminder of peace, happiness & your worth or pass it to someone with a kind word. 2y
BarbaraBB What a great catch! And I love your story @Read4life they seem very nice people 2y

I was going to read another book for #readingtheamericas23 #anguilla that was available on Scribd, but on looking at it today it sounds like hard work…! I decided that the tagged sounds like fun and I just bought a used copy on Amazon for 75p, which will arrive within the week so plenty of time to read this month.

I hope no-one else picked Message in a Bottle yet - a great tune and appropriate for the theme, I think!

LeeRHarry Love the song choice - so clever! 😊 2y
