The Secret Speech | Tom Rob Smith

Tom Rob Smith-the author whose debut, Child 44, has been called "brilliant" (Chicago Tribune), "remarkable" (Newsweek) and "sensational" (Entertainment Weekly)-returns with an intense, suspenseful new novel: a story where the sins of the past threaten to destroy the present, where families must overcome unimaginable obstacles to save their loved ones, and where hope for a better tomorrow is found in the most unlikely of circumstances . . . THE SECRET SPEECH Soviet Union, 1956. Stalin is dead, and a violent regime is beginning to fracture-leaving behind a society where the police are the criminals, and the criminals are innocent. A secret speech composed by Stalin's successor Khrushchev is distributed to the entire nation. Its message: Stalin was a tyrant. Its promise: The Soviet Union will change. Facing his own personal turmoil, former state security officer Leo Demidov is also struggling to change. The two young girls he and his wife Raisa adopted have yet to forgive him for his part in the death of their parents. They are not alone. Now that the truth is out, Leo, Raisa, and their family are in grave danger from someone consumed by the dark legacy of Leo's past career. Someone transformed beyond recognition into the perfect model of vengeance. From the streets of Moscow in the throes of political upheaval, to the Siberian gulags, and to the center of the Hungarian uprising in Budapest, THE SECRET SPEECH is a breathtaking, epic novel that confirms Tom Rob Smith as one of the most exciting new authors writing today.

Another masterwork. A delicate combination of history events and fictional stories. Khrushchev's secret speech, the Hungarian Revolution, and a detailed description of Gulag. Stories about love fear justice freedom and humanity always leave me in tears. With all the things happened around the world, I fear history repeats itself and we're all just in the middle of it. Like William Faulkner once said,"The past is never dead. It's not even past."

Finished the second book in the Leo Demidov, Child 44, Trilogy. This was a tricky one to review, definitely wasn‘t as good as the first one, don‘t really think the story telling was as good! Felt quite cluttered and trying to work out what was going on, would most probably have rated it between so-so and good, however will still be moving onto the third book in the trilogy. Always spoilt a bit when you love the first book so much!

The follow up to Child 44. This book continues the story of Leo Demidov and his family after the death of Stalin. It is well researched and well paced. Not as good as the first book, it is still a great read that leaves me looking forward to the final book in the series.

This photo shows a spider wrapping up its prey. No escape.

That was the underlying feeling in this book. The author skilfully evokes the fear and claustrophobia of life in the USSR.

This book is a sequel to Child 44, and I enjoyed revisiting the characters and setting. However, I thought the narrative was sometimes rushed and that the author was trying to cram too much into the book.

I look forward to Agent 6, the final part of the trilogy.

Aleida Love his Soviet series. 7y
Libby1 It is good, isn‘t it, @Aleida ? I‘m in the middle of a book right now but once I finish it I plan to start Agent 6. 7y
RealBooks4ever I need to read this book! The first was so good! 7y
Libby1 @RealBooks4ever - I didn‘t like this one as much as I liked Child 44 but it was still worth the read. And I also want to finish the trilogy! 7y
