"Cano does a fine job of setting mood and atmosphere, and her characters dance around one another with relentless industry and brooding allure, fighting their inevitable attraction." Publishers Weekly --- The day Anne Tinning turns seventeen, birds fall from the sky. But that's hardly the most upsetting news. She's being dismissed from the home she's served at since she was a child, and shipped off to become the newly hired parlor maid for a place she's never heard of. And when she sees the run-down, isolated house, she instantly knows why: There's something wrong with Rosewood Manor. Staffed with only three other servants, all gripped by icy silence and inexplicable bruises, and inhabited by a young master who is as cold as the place itself, the house is shrouded in neglect and thick with fear. Her questions are met with hushed whispers, and she soon finds herself alone in the empty halls, left to tidy and clean rooms no one visits. As the feeling of being watched grows, she begins to realize there is something else in the house with them--some creature that stalks the frozen halls and claws at her door. A creature that seems intent on harming her. When a fire leaves Anne trapped in the manor with its Master, she finally demands to know why. But as she forces the truth about what haunts the grounds from Lord Grey, she learns secrets she isn't prepared for. The creature is very real, and she's the only one who can help him stop it. Now, Anne must either risk her life for the young man she's grown to admire, or abandon her post while she still can.

@RaeLovesToRead has questions, y‘all!

🌒 It‘s hard to pick a scariest, but the first book that freaked me out was the graphic novel “Batman: Gothic” by Grant Morrison. It features a serial killer with no shadow, a haunted monastery, and even a jump scare when a ghost showed up on one page! 👻

🌒 I love horror! Not a big gorehound, but I like anything haunting and creepy! 😱

🌒 Tagged! A fun gothic dark fantasy! 🥀

#IHaveQuestions

RaeLovesToRead Wow! A jump scare in a graphic novel! 😱 1y
DaveGreen7777 @RaeLovesToRead I read the original comic books when I was much younger and new to horror… which is why I made the rookie mistake of reading them at 2 in the morning! 🤦🏻‍♂️ Freaked me out when I turned the page and there was a bizarre ghost face staring at me! 😱👻 1y
RaeLovesToRead @DaveGreen7777 The one time I literally jumped back from a comic was when I read the first Preacher volume and there was a TWO PAGE spread of a TORN OFF FACE 😳 I actually sold volume 2 before I read it 😅 Can't deal with Garth Ennis 1y

DaveGreen7777 @RaeLovesToRead Yeah, I‘ve read some Garth Ennis, so I understand! 😳 What annoys me about him is when he tries, he can really tell a compelling story (like most of his Punisher MAX series), but too often he just falls back on potty humor and shock value! 🤦🏻‍♂️ It may be a hit show now, but I gave up reading The Boys by him when his writing devolved into that of a teenage boy who thinks anything vulgar is automatically funny! 🤮 1y
RaeLovesToRead @DaveGreen7777 I've been warned that I won't like The Boys (TV show) so I shall avoid 😵 I swear I'm getting more sensitive not less 😅 1y
Branwen WE'RE BOOK TWINS! Loving horror but not the gore! 🤭📖📚💕 1y

Day 17 of the #Fallisbooked challenge by @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks and @OriginalCyn620

#GhostStory - Usually when I think about ghosts, I think of the Scooby Doo gang unmasking someone who was trying to scare everyone away to buy up land cheap (apparently real estate agents just don‘t exist in the Scooby Doo world)!

But the tagged book is a genuine ghost story with beautiful prose, a plucky heroine, and creepy atmosphere. Highly recommended! 👻

vivastory Have you read 5y
vivastory I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it 5y
OriginalCyn620 I used to live Scooby! 👻 5y

DaveGreen7777 @vivastory I got that book for Christmas but I haven‘t read it yet. I definitely want to get to it soon, though. “Scooby Doo gang meets Lovecraftian monsters” sounds like such a great concept! 5y
DaveGreen7777 @OriginalCyn620 When I was a kid, I loved so many of those Hanna-Barbera mystery cartoons, but Scooby was definitely my favorite! 😀👻 5y
britt_brooke My 5 year old is obsessed with Scooby Doo. He has a book about the villains and has read it so many times, I need to order a replacement. We watched an episode of Teen Titans Go last night where it was the Titans vs the Scooby Gang in Family Feud. Fun stuff! 5y
DaveGreen7777 @britt_brooke That‘s awesome! 😀 I remember as a kid, I thought the ghost of Captain Cutler was so cool with his glowing diving suit... although it seemed strange when it turned out he really was Captain Cutler... apparently his brilliant criminal plan was to frame HIMSELF for his crimes! 😂😂😂 (edited) 5y
britt_brooke @DaveGreen7777 🤣 He loves The Ghost of Captain Cutler! 5y

DaveGreen7777 @CouronneDhiver It sounds weird, but the flavors go soooooo good together! 🍨😋 6y
Elizabeth2 I have a friend who loves balsamic vinegar on ice cream. She made it for me and it‘s surprisingly delicious, so I can imagine that hot sauce might also work. Savory & sweet. 6y
DaveGreen7777 Oooh, that actually sounds really good, @Elizabeth2 😀 6y

Pickpick

This is the first in the series and sets it up well. It's very well written and atmospheric. The descriptions really make the story. The plot is interesting with some good dramatic moments. The ending was good too and I'm looking forward to the next book.
