The Wild Girl
The Wild Girl | Kate Forsyth
One of the great untold love stories - how the Grimm brothers discovered their famous fairy tales - filled with drama and passion, and taking place during the Napoleonic Wars. Growing up next door to the Grimm brothers in Hesse-Cassel, a small German kingdom, Dortchen Wild told Wilhelm some of the most powerful and compelling stories in the famous fairy tale collection. Dortchen first met the Grimm brothers in 1805, when she was twelve. One of six sisters, Dortchen lived in the medieval quarter of Cassel, a town famous for its grand royal palace, its colossal statue of Herkules, and a fairytale castle of turrets and spires built as a love nest for the Prince-Elector's mistress. Dortchen was the same age as Lotte Grimm and the two became best friends. In 1806, Hesse-Cassel was invaded by the French. Napoleon created a new Kingdom of Westphalia, under the rule of his dissolute young brother Jrme. The Grimm brothers began collecting fairy tales that year, wanting to save the old stories told in spinning-circles and by the fire from the domination of French culture. Dortchen's father was cruel and autocratic, and he beat and abused her. He frowned on the friendship between his daughters and the poverty-stricken Grimm Brothers. Dortchen had to meet Wilhelm in secret to tell him her stories. All the other sisters married and moved away, but Dortchen had to stay home and care for her sick parents. Even after the death of her father, Dortchen and Wilhelm could not marry - the Grimm brothers were so poor they were surviving on a single meal a day. After the overthrow of Napoleon and the eventual success of the fairy tale collection, Dortchen and Wilhelm were at last able to marry. They lived happily ever after with Wilhelm's elder brother Jakob for the rest of their lives.

I'm so so angry at this book. I wanted to love it. I loved the first 250 pages, but then abuse became entirely too central to the plot and a perfectly good book was ruined. Almost DNFed this one and i wish i hadnt finished this one. The ending wasn't worth it

TheAromaofBooks I hate that!! Nothing is more frustrating than investing in a book that goes off the rails in the end! 4y

Bummed the Kindle version doesn‘t have a cover. Anywho, this is yet another gem by one of my favorite writers, Kate Forsyth. “The Wild Girl” tells the story of Dorothea Wild, who grew up across the street from the Grimm brothers, & had a lot of input in the writing of their stories, in the midst of the Napoleonic Wars. Part history, part love story.

TRIGGER WARNING: Sexual abuse/Incest. However, it‘s done with care.

margreads I liked this one a lot but Bitter Greens is still my favourite. I do have a couple of her others to catch up on though 6y
Jess_Franzino @margreads I agree. Then again, “Bitter Greens” is a hard one to top. I think it‘s because Rapunzel is the main focus of Kate Forsyth‘s studies. 6y
margreads @Jess_Franzino i think it is so because it was my first Kate Forsyth book 6y

1.) Dusty Rose, Rose Gold, & ‘Millennial‘ Pink 2.) The latest season of “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”.
3.) “The Essex Serpent”, though mostly analysis, since I love seeing how others interpreted it.
4.) Depends on the burger. I rather fancy chipotle ranch.
5.) Hopefully a lot of writing & some exercise classes.

I really missed playing along with photo challenges last month, so I'm jumping back in with #AugustGrrrl . Catching up on yesterday's #wildestdreams , it would be mine to have a career like these Australian historical fiction women writers.

Cinfhen So glad you're back! And I agree, how awesome would that be?!? I love Kate Morton. 7y

I'm giving this book an overall Pick. Depending upon the place in the book, that would not necessarily be the case. I almost bailed at the beginning when it was reading like a bodice-ripping romance. That passed but other times I was convinced the book would be So-So because of consistency. As a big fan of historical fiction, I realized at the end that I enjoyed the book as a whole. Trigger warning for sexual & physical abuse.

THE WILD GIRL by Kate Forsyth is a historical novel about the Grimm Brothers & the woman who shared her stories with them. It was darker than I was expecting and not quite my cup of tea, but still fascinating. Comes with a trigger warning for sexual abuse.

I love this book. I love how it seamlessly weaves the weft strands individual lives with the warp threads of history, all while telling a wonderful story..full of other stories.

Feelings! Feelings! This book gave me so many feelings! I am in awe anytime an author is able to draw out my feelings, to actually make me feel things down in my gut. Amazing! There are definitely a lot of tragic moments in this book and Sometimes I can't handle that, but I couldn't stop.

Well... Huh. This audiobook was ok. The story was ok. It just felt SO LONG. It really felt way too long, and could have benefitted from having a good portion of it cut out. If you love historical fiction though, you may really enjoy this. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Peacetree19 Did you finish reading this? Thoughts? 8y
SpiritFireandDew I did! So at the beginning I thought that maybe I had checked out a real bodice-ripping romance, but as I continued I felt like there was more substance. I love historical fiction and storytelling/faerie tales, so I really did like it. Have you read it? 8y

When I heard Kate Forsyth on the Conversations with Richard Fidler podcast I wished I had a Ph.D. in fairy tales - she was fascinating, and so was this tale of the girl who gave the Brothers Grimm a great number of their tales. Her story and her love for Wilhelm Grimm was incredibly moving 💕
