Against Memoir: Complaints, Confessions & Criticisms
Against Memoir: Complaints, Confessions & Criticisms | Michelle Tea
5 posts | 5 read | 2 reading | 5 to read
The razor-sharp but damaged Valerie Solanas, a doomed lesbian biker gang, recovering alcoholics, and teenagers barely surviving at an ice creamery: these are some of the larger-than-life, yet all-too-human figures populating America's fringes. Rife with never-ending fights and failures, theirs are the stories we too often try to forget. But in the process of excavating and documenting these queer lives, Michelle Tea also reveals herself in unexpected and heartbreaking ways.Delivered with her signature honesty and dark humor, this is Tea's first-ever collection of journalistic writing. As she blurs the line between telling other people's stories and her own, she turns an investigative eye to the genre that's nurtured her entire career--memoir--and considers the price that art demands be paid from life.Michelle Tea is the author of numerous books, including Black Wave, Valencia, and How to Grow Up. She is the creator of the Sister Spit all-girl open mic, and founded RADAR Productions, a literary nonprofit that oversees queer-centric projects. Currently she curates Amethyst Editions, a queer imprint of the Feminist Press.

Finally mostly moved, two states away and feeling a little homesick even though that‘s not home.

Gaining back a little normalcy with morning reading again. This book has been good so far.

tpixie I‘m sure it will take at least 3 months to feel settled in. Protect your reading time. 📚Try to find a cute book store. 📚Or if they have one, a farmers market. 👩🏼‍🌾 🥬🥒🌽 5y
SkeletonKey @tpixie - thanks for the advice! I think I will do a bookstore browse today. 💜 Can‘t wait for Farmers Markets too. 5y

I only bought 2 books at this year‘s #TXBookFest. But I added others to my TBR, and put two on hold from the library. These are from the Queer Publishing Today panel, which was probably my favorite of the fest. The authors talked about zines, which really brought back memories! And about the importance of small queer friendly publishing houses. Kaulfus is an Austin local trans author.

kgriffith Part of sort of spearheading the library project at my local equality center has included getting to catalog all of the small press lesbian fic we‘ve had donated from the 90s and before. It‘s an incredible chunk of history. 6y
BookNAround If you‘re interested in small LGBTQ presses, take a look at Bywater Books out of Ann Arbor. I read and enjoyed two of their books this summer. 6y
Soubhiville @BookNAround thanks! I‘ll do that! 6y
Soubhiville @kgriffith that‘s really cool! I read that kind of thing voraciously as it was recommended to me in the early 2000‘s, but I‘m a little less in the loop these days. One of my favorite things about book fests is taking notes of all the authors and book titles spoken of during the panels! 6y
