DI Ben Kitto needs a second chance. After ten years working for the murder squad in London, a traumatic event has left him grief-stricken. Hes tried to resign from his job, but his boss has persuaded him to take three months to reconsider. Ben plans to work in his uncle Rays boatyard, on the tiny Scilly island of Bryher where he was born, hoping to mend his shattered nerves. His plans go awry when the body of sixteen year old Laura Trescothick is found on the beach at Hell Bay. Her attacker must still be on the island because no ferries have sailed during a two-day storm. Everyone on the island is under suspicion. Dark secrets are about to resurface. And the murderer could strike again at any time. Praise for Kate Rhodes: A vividly realised protagonist whose complex and harrowing history rivals the central crime storyline Sophie Hannah, Daily Express A pacy psychological thriller Laura Wilson, Guardian Both the plot and the writing keep one thoroughly engaged throughout Daily Mail Like Nicci French, Kate Rhodes excels at character, pace and sense of place Erin Kelly, author of The Poison Tree One of the most absorbing books I've read in a long time - perfectly thrilling Mel Sherratt An enjoyably scary chiller Sunday Mirror The pace never slackens from the first page to the last Rachel Abbott, author of Only the Innocent Fast paced and harrowing, this gripping novel will leave you guessing until the end Bella Great twists, turns and surprises Sun

Good stuff. I‘ve read the 2nd, 3rd & 4th books in this series and went back to read the 1st. Sometimes that‘s a disappointment as the author is still forming the characters and they don‘t quite add up with their future selves. Ben Kitto leaps out as himself straight away here though and stuff that turns up in later books is seeded here too. Really well done.

I'm super late with my March #bookspin list but I haven't peeked at the numbers posted by @TheAromaOfBooks yet I promise. It's pretty much the same as last month with one book I read replaced by its sequel, two books added that are lying around the house, and two books that I'm still reading left on the list.

nocto OK, now I've looked at the numbers! I get two mysteries to read and I'm trying to avoid mysteries, kind of, but that's good because it'll clear them off the list without me feeling guilty for abandoning them. And they'll both be fun reads. 3y

Thank you @Lizpixie for alerting me to this crime thriller set in the Isles of Scilly. I really enjoyed it!

After an incident, Ben Kitto returns home to the tiny island of Bryher, to consider his future as an undercover officer. But the disappearance of a local teenager finds him unexpectedly leading a murder investigation, and uncovering the islanders‘ secrets.

rockpools The sense of place was spot-on, & I enjoyed the twists and turns. I could have done without ‘romance‘, mind. But Stephen Perring, the audiobook narrator, gets 8 out of 5 stars for pulling off a range of westcountry accents without ever lapsing into generic farmer/pirate. Can‘t wait to carry on the series.

Two short-ish reads from the Audible 2for1 sale - I‘m very excited by these!

Mrs_B The shepherd‘s life was fascinating! Enjoy! 4y

Mrs_B I listened to it via BorrowBox from my library. @squirrelbrain who knew how important shepherds crooks were?! 4y
squirrelbrain I‘ve just downloaded Borrowbox @mrs_b - not heard of it before. Have you tried it @RachelO ? It seems to be for audiobooks only (I think) and works like Libby - will give you an extra 4 holds if you need them! 😁 4y
Mrs_B @squirrelbrain I get ebooks through it too (but it might just be my library that does that?). It doesn‘t play nice with kindle - but the app works well on phone/tablet. It‘s how I listen to all my audiobooks now! (edited) 4y
rockpools I do use BorrowBox @squirrelbrain - my library does audiobooks and ONE ebook through it (The Beekeeper of Aleppo. 🤷🏻‍♀️. No idea 🤣🤣.) Down here it‘s good for current fiction (queues withstanding), but nf/older stuff/international stuff are more likely to be on Libby, so I tend to use that more - but as @Mrs_B says, that‘s possibly just my library! 4y

My 1st book of April is done! I really enjoyed this new-to-me series about DI Ben Kitto, on leave from the London Met Undercover Murder Squad after the death of his partner. Returning to the Scilly Island of Bryher to recuperate, he‘s drawn into an investigation after a young girls body is found washed up on the beach near his family home with a knife wound in her chest. I loved the setting & the characters. #LitsyAtoZ2020 #LetterR #PopSugar20

rockpools There‘s a murder series set on the Scillies??! Massively stacked! 5y

Bk5 in my #QuarantineLibraryHaul is another 1st in a series. DI Ben Kitto is burnt out after 10 years on London‘s Murder squad. Persuaded to take a leave of absence rather than resign, he returns home to the tiny Scilly island of Bryher to work in his uncles boatyard. But his convalescence takes a backseat when the body of a teenager is found on the beach at Hell Bay. Her killer is still on the island after a two day storm stops all ferries.

MyNamesParadise I always love British crime thrillers (usually more than American ones) and it‘s not published in the US yet. Sometimes I wish I lived in Britain! 5y

DI Ben Kitto returns to the island where he grew up and becomes embroiled in a murder inquiry. The book is well written and the story line keeps you guessing, I just didn‘t warm to the main character. I definitely want to adopt Shadow 🐕 though. Rating: 3 ⭐️

Thanks to Netgalley and publishers, Simon & Schuster UK, for the opportunity to review an ARC.
