The Monster Baru Cormorant
The Monster Baru Cormorant | Seth Dickinson
11 posts | 6 read | 8 to read
A breathtaking geopolitical fantasy as fraught as Game of Thrones, The Monster Baru Cormorant is the long-anticipated sequel to Seth Dickinson gut-wrenching debut, The Traitor Baru Cormorant. Baru Cormormant's world was shattered by the Empire of Masks. To exact her revenge, she has clawed her way up razor-edged rungs of betrayal, sacrifice, and compromise, becoming the very thing she seeks to destroy. Now she strides in the Masquerade's halls of power. To save the world, she must tear it asunder...and with it, all that remains of her soul. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

I was having a little trouble getting into this one -- Baru just doesn't feel quite right in the opening 10% -- and found a bunch of terrible reviews of it from people I trust. I'm honestly tempted to DNF it right now so it doesn't taint my memories of the first book as other people have said it did! Not sure.

No sequel was going to match or improve upon the brilliance of The Traitor Baru Cormorant, a book I finished reading two years ago this week but have never stopped thinking about. The Monster Baru Cormorant suffers from being a middle book in a larger story, but it introduces new characters and nations to get caught up in Baru's schemes and it ends with a hell of a reveal. It's going to be a long wait for book 3! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Review to come, but by finishing The Monster Baru Cormorant I hit my Goodreads Challenge number with a week left in 2018!

Baru‘s heart crashed like a mismanaged currency: cheapened, devalued, undercut.

I won this in a Bookish.com giveaway at the beginning of last month I believe and I finally got it in the mail today!

Now I need to buy the first book so I can actually read it 🤦🏻‍♀️

In time the things you‘ve done become too large to carry with you. So you set them down. And you think that you are free. But then you look back and see that someone else carries your burden now: you see that you have dropped your weight upon those who stood behind you.

That is a hell of a way to end a chapter.

"The world‘s a big deck of cards, Baru." He paused to drain his whiskey. "Sometimes you just get a bad hand."

There were three books I was looking forward to this year, and two of them have been delayed until 2019. Fortunately, The Monster Baru Cormorant came out as scheduled and I started reading it last night.

This arrived yesterday and I‘m so happy to have it in my hands! I read The Traitor Baru Cormorant in May and it‘s easily one of my favorite reads this year. This isn‘t my typical go-to genre (geopolitical fantasy) but this book may have changed my mind! I had to push through the first 50-ish pages, but then I was all in.

I‘m so excited to start this one next month (only #BOTM this month). Definitely my top 5 most anticipated releases this year.
