Instant Mom | Nia Vardalos
10 posts | 10 read | 8 to read
"Some families are created in different ways but are still, in every way, a family." Writer and star of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Nia Vardalos firmly believed she was supposed to be a mom, but Mother Nature and modern medicine had put her in a headlock. So she made a choice that shocked friends, family, and even herself: with only fourteen hours' notice, she adopted a preschooler. Instant Mom is Vardalos's poignant and hilarious true chronicle of trying to become a mother while fielding nosy "frenemies" and Hollywood reporters asking, "Any baby news?" With genuine and frank honesty, she describes how she and husband Ian Gomez eventually found their daughter . . . and what happened next. Vardalos explores innovative ways to conquer the challenges all new moms face, from sleep to personal grooming, and learns that whether via biology, relationship, or adoptionmotherhood comes in many forms. The book includes laugh-out-loud behind the scenes Hollywood anecdotes, plus an Appendix on how to adopt worldwide. Vardalos will donate proceeds from the book sales to charities. Vardalos candidly shares her instant motherhood story that is relatable for all new moms (and dads!)

I read some amazing non-fiction this year and this is some of my top titles. You can hear me talk about some of them on the Best of 2018 Reading Envy Podcast Episode ("Stocking Stuffer") and the picks of others too. http://tinyurl.com/ReadingEnvy139

Nia Vardalos, mom and adoption advocate (and screenwriter, actress, voiceover artist, etc) tells the story of adopting from the state system. First there is backstory on her career and struggles with infertility, but then the focus is on the fost-adopt process. What I loved are the little sparks between the child and her new parents, and the funny things they find they have in common. Nia is very honest about the transition period. Great cover too.

Sooo relatable 😂

JacqMac Relatable for me too. My grandmother is 93 and she still gets pimples. She has very few wrinkles though. I guess everything has a price. 😂 7y

This is fantastic so far! Vardalos' writing is so engaging. I love that she specifically asked her daughter for permission to write a book about her and that, while she shares plenty of context of her journey to making a movie, it doesn't take over and become the focus.

This book often had me giggling, and often in tears. As someone who is starting the process of adoption and has had that struggle with infertility and loss, this memoir rang so true, and expanded my mind on the possibility of adopting from foster care eventually. This was a beautiful and funny meditation on becoming a mom.

Cinfhen Best of luck as you embark on your journey to motherhood 💕 8y

Read this on a whim as I have no interest in children and was inspired by Ms. Vardalos' long and arduous quest to become a Mom. She never gave up despite years of failure and disappointment.

Today's bookish delivery. Starting the adoption process and want to read some books around that. If anyone has any good recommendations of fiction or non-fiction about adoption, I would love to hear about them.

"But I wanted a family and had to walk over hot coals to find my daughter." I couldn't have said it better myself. I'm loving this book!
