As usual, I enjoyed the historical part (1940s) of the story best but the present day was good too. This addresses women‘s workplace issues in both. Parts, especially the romance storylines, were fluffy but I didn‘t mind that right now.

We move from 1949 to 2018 and come across girls who auditioned for being a Subway Girl in 1948 to an advertising agency in 2018 that needs a new campaign to help the transit system get more ridership.

panHumbug. Unfortunately my initial assessment of this book was correct- predictable, bland and trite. The best part of this book was the historical note at the end speaking to the history of the actual Subway Girls. I feel like this book was a missed opportunity and I‘m pretty perturbed about it 😒
Currently reading this one for book club and feeling rather meh about it. I love a good historical fiction novel but I feel like all the ones that do a split timeline of back then vs now all follow the same formula. Plus I‘m always much more interested in the historical storyline vs present day. Only 28% of the way in and I‘m pretty sure I already know where this is headed... 🤷♀️
so-soAdored the historical aspect of this, how the concept of subway girls was an actual thing. What I didn't adore, however, was Olivia, the present tense POV. She had less spine than an earthworm and certainly talked the "strong female character"-talk, but never actually walked it. Charlotte, on the other hand, was a delight, and her POV kept me listening.
Work is quiet, so I'm hanging out with an audiobook. Cannot believe I've actually read 10 hours, it's pure madness. 😂 #24in48

HAPPY PUBLICATION DAY, SUSIE!!
THE SUBWAY GIRLS is a delightful read.
I enjoyed going back to 1949 and seeing how women had to really struggle to get out of the required mold of being a housewife and mother.
Ms. Orman Schnall's writing is refreshing and enjoyable. The story line is interesting and had me researching The Subway Girls.

pickA rare piece of NYC history. From the Historical Note section: Miss Subways was a contest that took place in the NYC subway system 1941 - 1976. Gave subway riders something to look at during their rides. (Pre-cellphones when people had nothing to stare mindlessly at.) Told in alternating viewpoints by Charlotte Friedman (1949) and present-day Olivia Harrison. Loved the historical aspect, but not the predictable and contrived storylines.
bailedMade it to page 60 before bailing. This seemed like a rehash of so many other stories.
Trying to make a dent in my ARCs. Every time I finish one I have two more arriving. Starting this today.
