My Brilliant Friend
My Brilliant Friend | JAMAL KASA
A modern masterpiece from one of Italy’s most acclaimed authors, My Brilliant Friend is a rich, intense, and generous-hearted story about two friends, Elena and Lila. Ferrante’s inimitable style lends itself perfectly to a meticulous portrait of these two women that is also the story of a nation and a touching meditation on the nature of friendship. The story begins in the 1950s, in a poor but vibrant neighborhood on the outskirts of Naples. Growing up on these tough streets the two girls learn to rely on each other ahead of anyone or anything else. As they grow, as their paths repeatedly diverge and converge, Elena and Lila remain best friends whose respective destinies are reflected and refracted in the other. They are likewise the embodiments of a nation undergoing momentous change. Through the lives of these two women, Ferrante tells the story of a neighborhood, a city, and a country as it is transformed in ways that, in turn, also transform the relationship between her protagonists, the unforgettable Elena and Lila. Ferrante is the author of three previous works of critically acclaimed fiction: The Days of Abandonment, Troubling Love, and The Lost Daughter. With this novel, the first in a trilogy, she proves herself to be one of Italy’s great storytellers. She has given her readers a masterfully plotted page-turner, abundant and generous in its narrative details and characterizations, that is also a stylish work of literary fiction destined to delight her many fans and win new readers to her fiction. Review "Everyone should read anything with [Elena Ferrante's] name on it." — The Boston Globe "One of the more nuanced portraits of feminine friendship in recent memory." — Vogue "This gorgeous novel should bring a host of new reader's to one of Italy's most acclaimed authors." — The Barnes and Noble Review "Ferrante, beautifully translated by Ann Goldstein...writes with a ferocious, intimate urgency." — The San Francisco Chronicle "Ferrante draws an indelible picture." — Shelf Awareness "A compelling and moving coming-of-age story" — Booklist "More than a conventional up-from-poverty tale." — Publishers Weekly About the Author Elena Ferrante was born in Naples. Though one of Italy’s most important and acclaimed contemporary authors, she has successfully shunned public attention and kept her whereabouts and her true identity concealed.

Mehso-so

My Brilliant Friend is the story of two best friends who remain close through childhood and the beginning of adulthood.

I liked listening to this one while working on things around the house, exercising or walking, and the narrator did a great job. However the reason behind the three stars is I feel like it‘s a bit forgettable. I‘m not sure I‘d really recommend this one to many people.

Help me stick with this! Tell me why you loved it, spoiler if you have too! I want to love it, I just don't yet.

sprainedbrain I'm just starting it... how far along are you? 8y
ReadingSusan I bailed 160 pages in. I HATED every one of those 160 pages. Huge disappointment. 8y
Sydsavvy @sprainedbrain 20% in / chapter 16. Far enough to be hooked. 8y

Sydsavvy @ReadingSusan oh dear! I'm getting why! 8y
Sydsavvy @ReadingSusan I'm not use to a narrator that is so self-deprecating and her best friend apparently being so awful. (edited) 8y
Karkar I could not love it...I will tell you what people told me "the second one is better ". But you know I have not had the desire to pick up the second one 8y
Lindy I loved the complicated friendship between the girls, the love/hate relationship. Also the Naples setting is almost a character too. 8y
Sydsavvy @Karkar very interesting!!! 8y
Sydsavvy @Lindy ok so true on Naples! 8y
Tikabelle I also bailed. I may try it again at some point but I needed a strong story line and this is not that. 8y
ReadingSusan @Sydsavvy I can usually deal with characters who aren't likeable. But I need a story not a meandering, depressing book about people who hate each other and are miserable. 8y
Sydsavvy @Tikabelle @ReadingSusan lol this is really confirming my dislike 😂 8y
ramyasbookshelf I loved this book.. I thought the characters were sooo real and the slow, languid pace of the book and the relationship totally appealed to me. I listened to the audiobook version and loved the voice of the narrator and the Italian words spoken with that awesome accent.. but with ferrante's books I've seen that you either love them or hate them., haven't seen too many in the middle ground. 8y
Sydsavvy @ramyasbookshelf ok that's really interesting! Makes a lot of sense. My fault with books is that I want a true character with an arc to it, so if I don't get that, the book is doomed. 8y
Jillsandypants I bailed on this about half way through. 8y

I just started reading this and immediately fell for the fine sentences. "He had no brain, and in his heart he had only himself." Great start to hopefully a great book.

Demanda It's so good! 9y
