Fun read! I wanted to learn more about the Silk Road before I taught my kids (homeschool) about Marco Polo. This is a fairly easy read and offered a refreshing change of perspective and gave me a footing into Asia in the Middle Ages. Each chapter is a mini biography of a different person from a different century.

I'm having a hard time reading this book. Has anyone read it? Is it worth the effort? The reviews glow, and I am reading late at night, but it's so hard to wrap my mind around the syntax. Please share your thoughts.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I just finished it. The syntax is challenging but you adjust after a while. The subject matter was difficult. Still worth reading. The writing is spot-on and sympathetic. The characters, however, were infuriating. 8y
dixi_e I just came on for this very question: Is it worth it? I have so many library TBR pile and I'm not sure I'm up for struggling with the style. 8y

I just love Ann Patchett. I got this book as part of my hurricane supplies, but was lucky that Mathew didn't hit us. I enjoyed this book, but not quite as much as Bel Canto and State of Wonder. I'm always in awe of her pacing though. She has a knack for telling a novel on what feels like a single breath.

This was my favorite of the Neopolitan novels, but you have to read them all in order. I swallowed them whole this summer. I loved the characters' complexities and the truth of what a frenemyship is. Truly spectacular. I'm sad they over.

I'm reading the Little House books to my sons, and this is my favorite so far. We were all completely mesmerized. It was so hard for me not to sneak an extra chapter after they went to bed. Little House on the Prairie had a lot of racism I had edit out, but this was pure magic.

AnnaDesourdy How old are your kids? Mine are 5 and 3 so I don't they're quite ready but I'll have to remember this series when they are! 8y

mamaguru @AnnaDesourdyAuthor Sorry for the delay. My kids are 6 and 8. I agree that yours are too young to fully appreciate it just yet. There is a lot of historical context that needs explaining, but in a few years it will be great. 8y

Perfect summer reading! I fell into this book last night and will be done tonight. Last week was very demanding at work, and this was just the right antidote.

mamaguru I can't even remember what this was about now. Am I old? Do I read too much? Was this just not memorable? 8y

I just started reading this and immediately fell for the fine sentences. "He had no brain, and in his heart he had only himself." Great start to hopefully a great book.
