Movie Geek: The Den of Geek Guide to the Movieverse | Simon Brew, Den of Geek
13 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
Movie Geek is a nerdy dive into popular movies, brought to you by the award-losing Den Of Geek website, with a foreword by the UK's foremost film critic, Mark Kermode. Discover hidden stories behind movies you love (and, er, don't love so much), and find out just why the most dangerous place to be is in a Tom Hanks film. Fascinating, surprisingly and hugely entertaining, this leftfield movie guide is gold for film buffs, and might just bring out the geek - hidden or otherwise - within you... Includes: Alternative movie endings that were binned Movie sequels you didn't know existed Massive box office hits that were huge gambles The collateral damage of Tom Hanks movies Hidden subtexts in family movies Disastrous things that went wrong on modern movie sets...and much, much more!

1. Sixteen Candles

2. Pretty In Pink

3. Dirty Dancing

I was born in 1990 so I didn‘t see any 80‘s movies until later on. Every time I watch something on TV from another decade with my mom, I say to her,”This movie looks like it‘s from another decade.” And she says to me,”That‘s because it is.”

In May I will be hosting another month long reading challenge called #MayMovieMadness! 🎥🎞🎬🍿

CHOOSE ANY MOVIE and match books to each of the prompts above. For an added challenge, you can attempt one of the harder levels by creating your own #ScenePrompts.

SCENE PROMPTS: Choose a scene or quote from the movie, and create a reading prompt to match it. Examples to come shortly!

Posting early so you have time to plan!
Please share!❤️🎥

EadieB Sounds interesting! 3y

Binged some more movies :) --- The best part of this season is the fact that there was so so many choices in movies! 💥Herbie Halloween - it was a Happy Gilmore production and silly cute, 💥Polaroid - which I enjoyed 💥Before I Wake - which was good but I think I had seen it last year or it just reminded me of something and 💥Await Further Instructions - which got really weird in the end!

Kshakal @JackOBotts we saw the war with grandpa and it was cute... the theatre did a nice job of keeping things clean and making sure people were socially distant 4y

Simon Brew is the founder and former editor-in-chief of the Den of Geek website while Ryan Lambie is deputy editor and Louisa Mellor is the television editor. This is an entertaining collection of articles and movie trivia structured around the life span of a film that covers a range of genres. I‘d have liked more foreign and old movies to be covered but the writers clearly love the medium and you‘re guaranteed to learn something interesting.

I deviated from the bookworm path on BookTube and made a video about some of my favorite underrated movies because I feel they deserve their time to shine! https://youtu.be/9o73j9AKam8

EadieB @Butterflyamore I don‘t really watch a lot of movies. I usually ask my daughter or my husband if they have seen any good movies and then I will watch them. That‘s why I love your list as they all sound good to me and I do want to watch them. I do watch a lot of movies between Christmas and New Years as my daughter comes home and I watch them with her. I actually have seen Finding Forrester and Gaslight and enjoyed them both. 5y
EadieB @Butterflyamore Charles Boyer is French so you really don‘t pronounce the er in his name. It sounds like Boy-yeah. lol I asked my husband for a movie he thinks is underrated and he said Medicine Man which stars Sean Connery. I just recently saw Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and really enjoyed that. I‘ll have to ask my daughter and I‘ll let you know what she thinks. 5y

EadieB @ Butterflyamore My daughter likes a lot of classic films such as: Two For the Road, The Great Gatsby plus other Bax Luhrman films, Funny Girl, Pretty in Pink, Charade, How To Steal a Million, Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, American Graffiti, Bright Star about John Keats, Meet Me in Saint Louis, Now, Voyager with Bette Davis. Different strokes for different folks! lol 5y
abookishbutterfly @EadieB I‘ve seen Bright Star and I liked it. I‘ll have to look up Medicine Man. I‘ll try to remember that about Charles Boyer‘s name! 5y
EadieB @Butterflyamore He's a very old-time actor (40's) and way before your time. My dad used to watch those old-time movies and now my daughter seems to be following him 5y

With internet reviews seemingly cornering the market on film reviews it‘s nice to see a book about quirky film facts (even if it is from a film website!). These articles are top tens or pieces that look at interesting facts about the art of film and I loved every part of this book. The book features incredibly fascinating facts and it is a book that knows to do a film book, it has to be varied and original. This book is all this and more.
