For me who has a deep and abiding love of Russian history I found this to be a well researched and executed read. This is the story of Tsar Nicholas mother. Despite knowing what was going to happen in the end...it was a solid and emotional read for me. This is also my #doublespin #bookspin read. @TheAromaofBooks

Audio. Once I figured out who some of the people were, it got more interesting, though there were always people throughout the book whom I couldn‘t place. Certainly, it got more interesting with the conflict between Minnie and Niki‘s wife. Alexandra when Alexandra was fawning over Rasputin. (But even before Rasputin, they really didn‘t get along.) I do think there was a lot of historical detail to the book; it seemed it was well-researched.

2nd book of this author that I get to read, and I'm willing to read more! It is also a 2nd book in a row about a Russian royal family. Is there a pattern forming?

2020 #16 I just returned from St Petersburg a few weeks ago. Visiting that lovely city gave me such an appreciation for Russian history. This novel took me back to The Winter Palace, Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood and The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul where The Empress and her family were laid to rest.

Loved this book! Very entertaining way to learn more about this time period in Russia and the downfall of the Romanov rule. Looking forward to reading more from this author.

The Romanov Empress blends politics, love, &family together to create a spellbinding tale of the Tsarina Maria‘s life. Along the way I had a bit of a history lesson, learning the familial links between herself &the many other rulers in Europe. Gortner does a great job bringing these historic characters to life &many times I felt I was right there in the middle of a ball or trekking along Russia‘s cold streets.

As usual, Gortner does an amazing job telling this story of a fascinating woman in history. I really enjoyed reading about Minnie, her life, family, tragedy, but mostly her strength.
