repost for @MidnightBookGirl:

In 2023 I'm hosting a #Pikeathon #ReadingChallenge. I'll host discussions as I read (I'm probably not going to read the Spooksville books, but I might), and do random giveaways to participants who tag me in reviews. I personally plan on re-reading the books in order of publication year, but there are no rules to that.

See original post for more details:

Today on my book podcast, author ALI HAZELWOOD and I would like to invite you to a slumber party — more specifically, Christopher Pike‘s 1985 SLUMBER PARTY. This particular gathering is extremely terrifying and verrrry problematic, but we chat about every last detail! 🔥❄️ Listen at the link in my bio.

The book is toxic about beauty (one of the central conflicts being between Lara and Rachael for Homecoming Queen) that I believe Nell‘s revenge is based upon her anger at losing her chance at beauty. But she also knows this isn‘t enough reason for murder, but instead of reconciling herself to that she draws her sister into it.

Michael_Gee Deep down, she knows Nicole lost more in the accident, her life basically. So she manipulates Nicole into hating the girls so that when the time comes she can justify her own cause by guise of revenge for her sister, too (& perhaps share the burden of guilt with someone else). A revenge based on vanity. (edited) 3y
Michael_Gee I do wonder if all of this was very much intentional. Perhaps by its perverse impetus for crime, Pike condemned the culture that prized youth and beauty (but at the same time he was willing to play into it). I think the very fact that gorgeous Rachael is also the levelheaded capable one who knows how to put out a fire and bandage an arm shows a subversion to the philosophy that beauty is all that mattered, or was enough to define a character. 3y

There‘s this amazing thing Pike does where Nicole‘s speech always references the past. It can even appear that she is referring to the immediate present, like after she exposes herself to the girls when Lara tries to tell her they‘re all friends. Nicole says “Dana gagged, Rachael couldn‘t even look at me”

Michael_Gee which WAS the girls‘ reactions to Nicole‘s naked body BUT it was also their reactions when she was on fire. Dana punched her eyes and gagged in horror, Rachael in order to save her threw a blanket over her, symbolically closing her eyes or so it would appear to a damaged child. 3y
Michael_Gee She doesn‘t mention Mindy because she isn‘t there: Mindy‘s been removed from the scene by drugging her unconscious. Mindy fainted when Nicole initially burned, so symbolically it doesn‘t matter that Nicole face her in the end. All Nell‘s machinations to trigger Nicole. 3y

Also! This book is the first one discussed on one of my favorite podcasts: Teen Creeps. They discuss trashy teen fiction from the eighties and nineties. Initially they started just to discuss Christopher Pike! I‘m glad they kept going.

Addison_Reads I was a huge Christopher Pike fan in the nineties. 3y

A group of girls are in a remote house for a ski weekend when strange things start happening…things that remind them of a traumatic event in their shared past.

Fun light read. I know I‘m talking about a 1985 (that year again!) teen book here, but it was ridiculously obvious. The characters had me interested though and there‘s some easy banter that‘s actually kinda charming. Expect lots of gals competing over boys parts. 🤷‍♂️🤪

These books are a blast from the past, and I expected cheesy/bad things going in.

This one included:
Girl hate
Anorexia framed as appealing/desirable was to stay slim
Disfigurement as unsettling
Ugly face talk
Saying you're bad at dating if you haven't been on one in 6 weeks
Food/fat shaming
A character asking "Did you enjoy being assaulted?"
9 year olds talking about sex and drinking alcohol
Fatphobia

This is my 1st Christopher Pike read. I just missed out on the RL Stine/Christopher Pike period of children‘s/YA lit.

Ive enough nostalgia-distance to note this isn‘t particularly well-written. Major issue—Christopher Pike (pseudonym for Christopher McFadden) does not have a particular gift for writing female characters.

I‘ll be reading more Pike I‘m conjunction with the Teen Creeps podcast so hopefully they‘ll get better.

Michael_Gee I love Teen Creeps! 3y

I have enough nostalgia-distance to say this is not particularly well-written. I checked—Christopher Pike is a pseudonym for Kevin Christopher McFadden.

He does not have a gift for writing female characters, at least at this point. I‘ll be reading more Pike in conjunction with the Teen Creeps podcast. Hopefully he‘ll get better.

A late start on my #litsypartyofone. I guess I was more tired than I knew...laid down for a second while my phone was updating & all of a sudden it's 1am 😱So I'm gonna enjoy a glass of wine & read a bit while watching some Project Runway All-Stars before heading back to bed. I guess my party will be more a Sat-Sun party 😂🎉

Sweettartlaura Oh my gosh! This was the first book I ever read by Christopher Pike❤️ 8y
Redjewel_7734 @Sweettartlaura My favorites by him are The Watchers, The Season of Passage, & The Cold One ☺️ 8y

Our local library, Hoover Public Library, had a slumber party for stuffed animals tonight. Kids dropped off their stuffed animals and the animals enjoyed a sleepover at the library. They had snacks, storytime, a bit of hijinks with the copier, and much more. I just think that's such a cute idea. And then they posted pictures and videos on Facebook so the kids could see what their animals were doing. Just another reason to love a library.
