Hydra | Matt Wesolowski

One cold November night in 2014, in a small town in the north west of England, 26-year-old Arla Macleod bludgeoned her mother, father and younger sister to death with a hammer, in an unprovoked attack known as the "Macleod Massacre." Now incarcerated at a medium-security mental-health institution, Arla will speak to no one but Scott King, an investigative journalist, whose Six Stories podcasts have become an internet sensation. King finds himself immersed in an increasingly complex case, interviewing five witnesses and Arla herself, as he questions whether Arla's responsibility for the massacre was a diminished as her legal team made out. As he unpicks the stories, he finds himself thrust into a world of deadly forbidden "games," online trolls, and the mysterious Black-eyed Children, whose presence extends far beyond the delusions of a murderess.

It's some time since I read the 1st in this series 'six stories' about a true crime podcaster, and I had forgotten how well the writer merges different media into an enjoyable crime story. Here, Scott King talks to a young woman who killed her family in 2014, but as he delves, he finds strands that take him into modern urban myths and the dark Web. Kept my interest and well done. I am looking forward to the next book.

BarbaraBB Good to know. I have meant to read this sequel too. 3mo

October wrap up!! 📚 I managed to read no less than 24 books during October, although I do confess I DNFed two and another two were actually rereads of all time favorites I enjoyed just as much the second time around (A Man Called Ove and A Monster Calls).

Favorites this month (not counting the rereads) were Hydra, The Twisted Tree, The Lion Tamer Who Lost, The Other Daughter, Tunnel Of Bones and Deadly Silence. All 5 or 4,5 stars!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

SilversReviews Wow.....what a great October for you. 5y

After reading #SixStories, I knew I wanted to read more of Wesolowski‘s work and I can tell you that #Hydra did not disappoint. Like its predecessor, Hydra is structured like a true crime podcast and my is it addicting?! I devoured this book in one sitting! The characters are interesting. The plot is intriguing and the story has just the right level of mystery and creepiness. A solid 4.5 star read! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
