Ray Garrett, a wealthy young American living in Europe, is grieving over the death of his wife Peggy. Ray is at a loss for why she would take her own life, but Peggys father Ed Coleman, a painter, has no such uncertaintyhe blames Ray completely. Late one night in Rome, Coleman shoots Ray at point-blank range. He thinks hes had his revenge, but Ray survives and follows Coleman and his wealthy girlfriend to Venice. In Venice, it happens again: Coleman attacks his loathed son-in-law, dumping him into the cold waters of the laguna. Ray survives thanks to the help of a boatman, and this time he goes into hiding, living in a privately rented room under a fake name. So begins an eerie game of cat-and-mouse. Coleman wants vengeance, Ray wants a clear conscience, and the police want to solve the mystery of what happened to the missing American. As Ray and Coleman stalk each other through the narrow streets and canals, the hotels and bars of the beguiling city, Those Who Walk Away simmers with violence and unease. Originally published in 1967, this is vintage Highsmith.

When Ray's wife Peggy commits suicide, her father, a volatile artist named Coleman, becomes convinced that Ray is responsible. His obsessive rage leads him to attack Ray, but instead of going to the police, Ray follows Coleman from Rome to Venice, hoping to explain his own grief and confusion in a way the other man will understand. Neither can bring himself to leave, with violent results. A fascinating novella that brings Venice to vivid life.

Great book bundle from Book Revue in Huntington, NY. Bought their book bundle for which a bookseller chooses the books from their remainder/overstock table based on the types of books you like.

#thankfulthursday @Cosmos_Moon
(1) Our first pet was a black dog we named Füles (Hungarian word referring to his pointy ears). He appeared one night in our yard soon after we'd moved there. We took him in because it was midwinter, very cold. We had high fences, he couldn't have entered the yard on his own, but for many years it remained a mystery who had put him there. ⬇️

eeclayton Much later a neighbor admitted it had been him. Afraid my parents would say no to a dog he'd found on the street as we'd only just moved in, he left us no choice.
(2) I'm thankful for my family's health and the quiet evenings with my hubby.

Had to share this here.

Samplergal Hysterical! Working in elementary schools much of my career, I remember one school where a random grandmother came in from off the street. She saw the sign and came in and eventually bought $75 of books for her grands. She was disappointed she couldn‘t get adult books! #booklover 7y

Certainly an interesting story, although perhaps a teeny bit implausible (how many times does this guy have to try killing his son-in-law anyway?). Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading a story set in Venice. It harkened back nicely to Don't Look Now.

My BF saw this on the table and riffed on the Kenny Rogers song "The Gambler". Now it's stuck in my head. Thanks a LOT ?

rabbitprincess @LeahBergen Even more annoying, he's not the sort of person who is bothered by having a song in his head, so I can't get back at him 😂🙄 7y
