The Duel | Giacomo Casanova
6 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
About This Book It was his intention to trade a few sword-thrusts in some place or another, and get the business over with. A sparkling new translation tells the tale of a young libertine who finds his rapier wit matched by actual rapiers. In this autobiographical tale, a young dandy is forced to flee his hometown after falling afoul of the authorities. But sheltering in the royal court he finds treachery and insult and is even- tually positioned into a meaningless confrontation over a woman he cares nothing about. Told with debonair wit and a merciless attitude toward high society, the tale becomes a tense adventure that leads to a surprising outcome. Pickpick

My July #bookspin (history repeating from 2020) is still a pick. Duels are still absurd.

Evidently I‘m re-reading this…and am the most recent poster (2020). 🤣 And again for BookSpin. (I don‘t consider this cheating)

Pickpick

November #BookSpin accomplished with this 70 page novella. The commentary on the absurdity of duels was amusing. No one really wants to go through with it, but to acknowledge that absurdity and not follow through is unbecoming...thank goodness the duel has yet to make a comeback. 🤞🏼😳🤞🏼

TheAromaofBooks My husband & I were just saying this morning that maybe we should have the presidential candidates duel to decide the election results 😂 4y

This afternoon I read two dueling novellas, ha ha. Which came out the victor?

The facts are these:
- Both arise from a damaged reputation or perceived slight of a woman.
- Both, oddly enough, involve discussion of or actual amputation of an arm
- Both bring all the DRAMA! 🤣

Because the German‘s tale feels more parable than not and the Italian‘s tale more rational - I dub the Italian the winner of this literary duel 😄
